Sydney was standing in the middle of the meadow her father would always take her to when she was young. The gentle breeze brought the familiar aroma of the flowers to her senses. All her childhood memories came rushing through her thoughts. Oh, how much love she had for this luscious meadow.

While the very sight of this place was enough to make someone fall in love with it, her true love for this place came from all the times she had spent with her father, playing tag, hide-and-seek, flying kites, just everything a kid could ask to do with their dad.

She closed her eyes, and allowed every smell, every sound to take her back her to her childhood, and let her be with him again. For so long, Sydney’s heart felt incomplete, as if someone had taken away a huge piece from it. For many months after he left her, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever feel complete again. Eventually, she came to realize that she never would.

Just the thought of that day never failed to bring her to tears. She could still see that military officer’s face so clearly. The look of pain that fell on him when he saw her childhood-self answer the door. He tried to spare her as best as he could by asking to see her mother, but Sydney knew why he was here.

She wiped away the tears from her eyes. No sense ruining the moment, she thought. She opened her eyes, and could see someone standing across the meadow. He was too far away to tell who it was, but whoever they were they started walking towards her. For some reason, Sydney felt her body being pulled towards him.

As she approached him, his features became more and more clear, and at the same time more and more familiar. It wasn’t long before her eyes widened, and her voice let out a deep gasp.

It was her dad! She didn’t know how he was here or where he had been, nor did she care. Her feet pushed off the ground, bringing her into a sprint. Her arms flung wide open. His arms did the same. They finally collided, and wrapped their arms around each other.

She had been waiting for this hug for 7 years, believing it would never actually come. They stood there for what she hoped would last an eternity. Her father then broke away to see his daughter’s face. “Hey there, Princess.” Her voice let out a joyous chuckle. She remembered how much she used to hate it when he called her that. But right now, she couldn’t be happier that she got to hear him say it again.

“Hi Daddy.” His smile brought back that long lost piece of her heart, and she was overwhelmed with giddiness to have it back, to have him back. She buried her face in his chest again, and didn’t ever want to let go. He kissed the top of her head and whispered “I love you, my little princess.”

Sydney opened her eyes, and couldn’t see anything. All the light of the meadow was gone. Her eyes began to adjust to what little light there was. She recognized this place; she was in her bedroom. She propped herself up on her bed, and turned on the light. She looked around, hoping beyond hope that she would see her father standing there. She was alone.

She laid her head down on her pillow again, and her eyes welled up with tears. While there was certainly sadness behind these tears, there was also joy as well. Her father may have left, but the piece of her heart he brought back was still there. To most, it may have seemed like the worst dream ever, to have her father come back only to be taken away again. But to her it was the best dream she could’ve ever had. She got to see her dad, something she believed would never happen again.

She leaned over to turn off the lamp. With her room dark again, she closed her eyes. A smile then spread across her face. “I love you too, Daddy.”
