Promteheus’ Garden

Episode 03

Ahmad Ehab El Hefny

13/07/2017

FADE IN:

“Here was a new generation, shouting the old cries, learning the old creeds, through a reverie of long days; destined to finally go out into that dirty gray turmoil to follow love and pride; a new generation dedicated more than the last to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken…”

  • F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

EXT. POE CITY, HARBOR – NIGHT

MICHEL FUNES, a middle-aged sailor and widower with a bushy face and decent built minus a revealing stomach. He stumbles into his boat.

INT. FUNES’ BOAT – NIGHT

He reaches for the lamp, when an emotionless, mechanical voice speaks out in English.

SICARIUS

(in English)

I’d keep that off if I were you.

He grabs his shotgun and turns for an aim, and there is a figure covered in head to toe in a suit and a fedora hat; the hands are covered in black leather and the face is obscured by a gas mask containing six eyes, with three arranged vertically on both sides. Michel is understandably freaked out by his appearance.

SICARIUS

(putting a copy of Camus’ The Plague on a desk)

Have you finished it?

MICHEL

(in French)

(recovering)

Yes.

SICARIUS

What do you think?

MICHEL

I liked it.

SICARIUS

I see.

MICHEL

What is this about?

SICARIUS

I believe this is about your daughter, Mr. Funes.

Michel is taken back.

MICHEL

…How did you know?

SICARIUS

I have friends in high places, Mr. Funes.

Shall we be civilized and start from the beginning?

Reluctantly, he puts aside his shotgun and sits down.

SICARIUS

Would you mind if I recount?

MICHEL

What do you know about me?

SICARIUS

You were born on February 16, 1967, you are currently forty nine years old, and you work as a sailor; your spouse Charlotte has passed away after a lengthy battle with lung cancer three years ago, and Audrey is your only child.

CUT TO:

EXT. DESSERT, UNKNOWN TIME – NIGHT

A flashback portrayed in sketchy, blurry lines in which the figures appear roughly aligned more as stickmen than actual human beings. One of them carrying a metal detector and accompanied by his dog, stops as his device signals the presence of something. The other two, one modelled after Michel, race and start digging.

FADE TO:

SICARIUS (V.O.)

Must have been quite a story, right? Three down on their luck friends find some money, a chance in the lifetime moment. The real jackpot.

CUT TO:

INT. FUNES’ BOAT – NIGHT

SICARIUS

Of course, I try to convince myself that getting shot at is a chance in the lifetime moment, but my career has proven otherwise.

Next thing you know, you received the Bogart treatment and Audrey’s in the crossfire as we are speaking.

Now, I only have two important things I don’t know.

MICHEL

What?

SICARIUS

Who exactly stabbed you in the back and where do they live?

MICHEL

Vincent. Vincent Gabel. He’s in a motel over by Monty’s. The other one is Mohammed Ansary.

SICARIUS

I know Mohammed. I talked with him a few hours ago.

MICHEL

…What did he tell you?

SICARIUS

How do you think I knew what happened?

MICHEL

…What happened?

CUT TO:

Sicarius breaking Mohammed’s arms and legs and holding him by the head. Mohammed is in pain and horrified out of his mind.

MOHAMMED

That’s all I know, I swear! I swear!

SICARIUS

I believe you.

MOHAMMED

What-what are you going to do now?

SICARIUS

I’m going to gouge your eyes out and bludgeon you to death with a wrench.

P.O.V. distorted shots of quick cutaways of a knife going through both eyes and then total darkness as the sound of flesh is pummeled and blood leaks out.

CUT TO:

INT. FUNES’ BOAT – NIGHT

SICARIUS

We talked.

The motorized delivery sends a chill down Michel’s spine.

SICARIUS

One more question; has he threatened you as of recently?

MICHEL

Yeah. He told to meet him tomorrow night at the motel. He wants me to hand over the money. In return, he’ll give back Audrey.

SICARIUS

Do you trust him?

MICHEL

(conflicted)

No-ah, well – Jesus, he was my best man.

SICARIUS

Friendships can go a long way, Mr. Funes. That’s why I’ll pay him a visit tonight.

MICHEL

What do you mean?

SICARIUS

I’m getting your daughter back tonight, Mr. Funes. He won’t see me coming. At best, he’ll be checking his arsenal and the other equipment, or watching over on the girl. That’s why I propose that the element of surprise will put us one foot ahead.

MICHEL

What do I do?

SICARIUS

(pulling out a case)

I’ll sneak in, subdue Gabel, and bring your daughter back. Meanwhile, you be the judge.

He opens the case and much to Michel’s surprise, it’s containing a gun.

SICARIUS

This piece stores only bullet, Mr. Funes. That bullet is stored for Gabel. I’m offering you the choice whether to fire him or not…

MICHEL

But…

SICARIUS

If you don’t, Gabel will go to jail for the act of kidnapping and attempted murder. If you shoot him, I will ensure that you walk away without having to look back.

MICHEL

How can I believe in what you’re saying?

SICARIUS

I have friends in high places.

(stands up)

See you soon, Mr. Funes. Make up your mind by then.

He casually walks out, sneakily snatching an axe as he leaves while Michel wants to say something but he can’t spit it out. He violently turns to the direction the stranger went through and bursts out, but the masked man’s already gone. He goes back and sits again, his shoulders slumped over, gazing intensely at the gun. CUT TO:

EXT. MOTEL – NIGHT

A car pulls up and Vincent Gabel gets out. He heads to his door and turns the knob.

INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT

He walks to and knocks on the wardrobe.

VINCENT

Audrey? I brought you some food.

He pulls it open; in less than a minute, he hysterically shrieks.

Audrey is crouched and shaken. Next to her is the bloodied corpse of Vincent’s dog, its intestines pulled inside out.

Vincent falls on the ground and is mercilessly stomped on the face repeatedly. The only thing he sees is six glowing eyes as we FADE OUT.

CUT TO:

Michel parking his car outside and storming into the motel.

MICHEL

Audrey!

AUDREY

Daddy!

Se rushes up to him and holds onto him tightly.

MICHEL

Are you alright?! Did he hurt you?!

AUDREY

No, no, I’m okay. It’s alright.

She comforts him as he starts crying. Meanwhile, Sicarius stands by and watches over the battered Vincent.

MICHEL

(to Sicarius)

Thank you.

SICARIUS

We’re not done. Have you made your decision?

 Michel doesn’t respond.

SICARIUS

Do you want him out on the streets again?

Do you want him to walk free? Do you want to show mercy and regret it later?

AUDREY

(confused)

Daddy, what’s he talking about?

MICHEL

…I…

SICARIUS

Do you want Audrey taken from you again?

Michel is on the edge, feeling his racing heart beats. He looks at his daughter for guidance, but she is just on the edge as she slowly begins to comprehend what is going on. He looks at Sicarius, who is casually immobile, which infuriates Michel.

Suddenly, his instincts take over, he grabs for his pocket, and there is a shot.

There is silence in the room as a body drops dead. The first to react is Sicarius, who informally walks past father and daughter and when they look at him, he tips his hat and leaves. CUT TO:

INT. BYRON’S OFFICE – NIGHT

Police sirens are wailing as DAPHNE NEWTON, successful lawyer and smooth talker, reflects on tonight’s venture with a cigar dangling between her fingers.

NEWTON

(laughs)

Quite a story.

You expect me to begin tomorrow, I suppose?

SICARIUS

I suppose.

NEWTON

(sighs)

You are a tiresome bloke, Byron.

SICARIUS

Tell me something I don’t know.

NEWTON

(inhales and exhales)

I’ll look into it as soon as possible. So, what are you going to do?

SICARIUS

I’m going to sleep and never wake up ever again.

NEWTON

(laughs)

That’ll be the day. That’ll be the day.

You want me to tell Yoshiko you said hi?

SICARIUS

I’ll tell her myself as long as I don’t forget.

NEWTON

(sarcastic)

God help us if you ever forget. That’ll be the end of days, my friend.

SICARIUS

(more to himself than her)

End of days…

He looks out and sees other buildings soaked underneath the tumbling rain. The view reaches across the city and we are fixated on a particular window in a complex building. We transition into the room and see Sicarius’ mask and equipment properly arranged in a suitcase. He places the middle weight bag between a smaller and bigger bag. Without the mask, he is JOHNATHON BYRON, a young man with grown facial hair which adds some character to his blank face and eyes; he’s clearly autistic.

He sits and turns on the TV, tensely flipping through several news programs that go on and off through various topics.
