I am alone.

The ocean sprays cold, salty water on my face. The wood is battered and worn under my bare feet.

I am alone.

The moonlight reflects off the waves in the distance, like dancing ribbons of solid silver. I can smell the salt in the air, can feel it on my skin.

I am alone.

The waves crash loudly below me. My dress is pressed tight against my body because of the steady winds blowing against me.

I am alone.

My hair is wet and tangled, and falls in a mess of knots down my shoulders. My arms are spread wide, like a plane about to take flight.

I am alone.

The water is about twenty feet down, and it is as dark as the sky touching it. My toes curl around the edge of the pier’s platform.

I am alone.

The waves crescendo into a roar, and my eyes focus on a distant point in the horizon.

I am alone.

My mind is blank.

I am alone.

My heart is beating faster than it ever has before.

I am alone.

The steady thumping of courage drowns out the warbling of fear.

I am alone.

The splintered wood disappears from under my feet.

I am alone.

The waves continue to crash against the pier, swallowing up everything, leaving nothing behind.

The sea is alone.
