Every Night's A Fright

It started with Damien.
A fragile boy.
Mainly sat with us at lunch to "protect" himself from bullies.
Who knew that his death would be caused by a beating.
A beating that was never solved.
His body was found in his room with all sorts of broken bones.
Most importantly, his skull.
Furthermore, bruises were found all over his body.
The suspects called into custody were known as "school bullies" who picked on Damien every day.
They pleaded innocent.
Of course, Damien's parents found this outrageous.
But I did not.
There was no proof.
Innocent 'till proven guilty.

Next was Emily
Known as the "good girl".
She was found dead at her best friend's house, Madison.
Madison was also found innocent.
Madison told us that she had woken up and looked/texted Emily.
Her parents later found Emily's dead body in her backyard shed.
Madison swore to us she didn't murder her own best friend, and we believed her.
Second person in our little group who was killed.
A week after Damien's death.
Emily's death was finally resolved.
She died from over 60 spider bites all over her body.
Unbelievable.
60 spiders attacked her in the middle of night, without her making a sound?
Making her run to the shed in the backyard?
Without waking Madison or her parents up?
Very unbelievable.
Madison told us, with great sorrow, that the irony was that Emily had a rational fear of spiders.

The next death was the breaking point for me and everyone else.
We knew that something was going on to our group.
One week after Emily's death, my best friend, Jason, was killed.
Once again, by an unbelievable cause.
He was discovered dead in his own pool.
The only thing left of his body was his upper chest and head.
I did not see him, his parents had described the scene to me.
The lower chest was too mangled to understand what had split him in half.
I could only think in my depressional haze of what happened to Jason.
Then it clicked.
But not just one thing.
The whole thing.
The final key was Jason's death.
He hated the beach because of shark attacks.
His biggest fear was sharks.
However, I wasn't the only one who noticed that everyone was getting killed by their nightmarish minds.
Madison, who used to hate me, had finally bonded with me.
We discussed the situation, and she said that we need to break the system.
I asked her if she meant like the movie "Final Destination."
She nodded her head with a frown.

Madison and I had told everyone left in our group of what our theory was.
But, it was too late.
Frankie had died.
He commited suicide.
The cops laid back in their chair with ease.
But it's much deeper than that.
Madison and I discovered a diary of Frankie.
In the diary, he discussed his secret love for Jacob.
I was surprised, and so was she.
So was everyone else we told.
The only ones we could tell.
The diary said that if anyone was to hurt Jacob, Frankie would get revenge.
"I could imagine him being so depressed with Jacob's death, that he killed himself."
I agreed.
Jacob still haden't left my mind.
It had only been a week since his death, and I still felt like shit.
Madison and I finally agreed to spend the night near eachother, because we were afraid.
We made love.
I woke up, scared to see whatever gruesome death would appear.
But, no.
I saw Madison smiling back at me.
"Every death is a week long, the next death is in 6 days," she reassured me.
Only 6 days to figure out how to break the system.
Whatever system it is.
"Could it be a curse," Harris suggested.
"Harris, you don't honestly believe in that stuff."
"Well...no, but you never really know," he responded.

The next person did not die.
Thankfully.
Jay was the victim of this week.
He was a stoner.
Loved weed.
Came to school high all the time.
Took him minutes to finish a simple sentence from his mind.
I found him the most enjoyable of the group, besides Jason.
He was sent to prison for his whole life for possession of weed.
But a lot of weed.
He was a "plug".
Plug was a term for someone who distributed weed.
So, his jail time was insane.
I visited him the other day and he told me he had a nightmare the night he was taken away.
"Man...I might just kill myself in here."
"Jay, be serious," I began, "what the fuck happened?"
"I don't know."
"I woke up to cops screaming in my ear, telling me to get up and follow them to jail."
"Then what," I asked.
"I was forced to show them all the weed I had in storage."
"It was a fuck ton," he added.
"What happened before all this?"
"I was having a nightmare of the exact situation...I swear, bro."
We said our goodbyes, and I'd visit him occasionally.
So would my other friends, if they'd make it.
Sad I had to say that.
Life sentence for Jay...
It's truly insane.
I think he should just suicide in there.
I honestly think it would be better for him.

The last victim was Harris.
Extremely smart.
Loved school.
He's not a typical nerd.
He was not afraid of anything.
He used his mind over matter.
Very good role-model.
He did not die.
No.
He disappeared.
But, it wasn't as simple as 1, 2, 3.
No.
Harris, like I said, was a smart boy.
He left us clues.
As soon as his disappearance papers began, Madison and I ran to his house.
On his desk was a paper that read...
"My biggest fear is getting trapped in a dream."
"Not waking up is the absolue fear in me."
"It's scarier than you think."
Just then, words started to appear on the paper.
This gave us goosebumps.
Like it was a magic spell.
But it wasn't.
Madison could only weap while I spoke.
"That's Harris."
"Stuck in his dream for eternity; writing to us."
"There must be something we can do," Madison shrieked.
"Wait," I replied.
"Look what he's writing!"
The words turned into paragraphs.
"Guys, don't worry; the dream I'm stuck in is some sort of other reality/dimension."
"You guys are standing right next to me; all of you."
Madison and I started crying.
"However, no one knows nothing of the real you."
"Only I do."
"So, I sit here talking to them (you guys), whilst writing to you—the real you."
"You need to survive your dream. It's the only way you can live."
"Your nightmare will show your biggest fear."
"Live through it, and you'll live in real life."
"However, whatever happens to your body in the dream, stays with you in real life."
Madison gasped.
"So that's why Damien's body was...and Jacob's..."
I could only nod.
"Good luck, guys."
"P.S: trust me, I'm in a better place because we are all alive and together."
Madison and I could only smile and hug to this.
Harris did it.
He outsmarted the game.
Not fully.
He still doesn't know what is going on, but he managed to explain to us even after it effected him!
Harris is the most smartest boy I've ever met!

...

This is it.
It's been a week since Harris's death.
Me and Madison both tried to stay awake as long as we could.
We knew one of us would be attacked tonight—in our dreams of course.
We made love once again.
I told her I loved her.
...

...

...

I woke up the morning.
The clock read 6am.
I saw Madison's body next to mine.
She was sleeping.
I shook her body.
But she didn't wake up.
I shook and shook, but she wouldn't even flicker an eyelash.
I slapped her.
And slapped her.
I felt more and more evil as I went on.
I gave up, crying on her shoulder.
Nothing was wrong with her body.
No scratches, nothing.
I cried and cried.
I threw the lamp in my room at the window.
I threw anything on my desk at the wall.
I pulled my hair till pieces fell out.
...

...

...

...

Then I woke up.
It was a nightmare.
I look to see Madison...

...

...

...

...

...

I attended her funeral a week later.
Her body had no scratches or nothing.
I was so bad in high school, that I was taken to a juvenile detention school.
I have become emotionally unstable to the point where I might kill someone.
Anyone who had to do with whatever happened the last few weeks, deserves to die.
Fuck this game!
Whatever this game or curse was!
Fuck it!
It killed Damien, the most innocent kid ever.
Emily, the good-girl who studied hard and deserved to have a successful career.
Jacob, my best friend since 5th grade.
Frankie, the quietest boy ever who wanted nothing but love, which he knew would never work out.
Jay the chillest dude ever, who did not die, but was given a life-sentence of prison for his distribution of weed; he didn't deserve a life sentence.
Harris, the smartest boy ever who outsmarted the game; he saved my life.
Madison...the love of my life.
I'll never ever forget any of them!

...

...

But I still wonder one thing...
Was it my turn or hers?
Was my biggest fear for Madison to die?
Or was her's for me to suffer?
Maybe not suffer.
Maybe for me to change.
Because I have.
I've changed in attitude and motivation.
Maybe her biggest fear was that mine would come true...
I'll never know unless I understand this curse/game.
