Prometheus’ Garden

Episode 05

By

Ahmad El Hefny

27/07/2017

Surrounded by the dark, a clock ticks towards twelve o’clock. When it reaches its inevitable destination, a bell chimes left and right. Cracks of light gloss through moving walls, and we find out that the “dark” was in fact walls being grinded by gears to make way for a limitless sky. In the middle of all this machinery, a gigantic tower stands in the middle, soaring over all past and present architecture of Poe City.

The sun shoots its ray downwards and beams upon the tower; through the many reflections of the glass tower, the ray spreads all over the city and showers itself over the entire city from beginning to end. This is how the day always begins at Poe City.

EXT. S.Y.M.P.A.N. INC., ROOFTOP – DAY

A mesmerized Sol sits on her rooftop with her kitten, Moon, on her lap.

SOL

(gently caressing Moon)

Can you believe it? I can fly as high as possible and yet it never gets old.

INT. S.Y.M.P.A.N. INC, LAB – DAY

Elizabeth is preparing her coffee; right now it seems as if she is talking to herself.

ELIZBAETH

(clicking her ear piece)

You there?

CUT TO:

SOL

Good morning.

CUT TO:

ELIZBAETH

Two cups of sugar?

CUT TO:

SOL

(grinning)

What else?

CUT TO:

ELIZABETH

Just that an asteroid is heading for India in a matter of 23 seconds.

After mixing the ingredients, she heads to one of the rooms, where Brandon Jones is being examined and poked by various scientists behind a sheet of glass.

ELIZABETH

(to another Scientist)

Anything new?

SCIENTIST

Internal organs nonfunctional. Based on his answers to our questions, food, drink, and breathing is no longer applicable to him.

ELIZABETH

But still no logical explanation?

SCIENTIST

You don’t buy that he got thrown out of hell by Satan?

ELIZBAETH

I’ve got my limits. I’ll interview him.

SCIENTIST

Good luck.

ELIZBAETH

Thanks.

(enters)

Good morning, Mr. Jones.

JONES

(politely)

Oh, good morning, Doctor.

ELIZABETH

Is there anything we can get you?

JONES

No, no, I…well…

(geeky)

Please, Doctor, tell me she’s here!

ELIZBAETH

Well, she should be here right around…

A whirl in the wind.

ELZABETH

…now.

SOL

(friendly)

Hello, Officer Jones. I’m Sol.

JONES

I…I…this is amazing!

Listen, listen, I know this sounds weird, but…

…can we fist bump?

SOL

…You want a fist bump?

JONES

(rambling)

Well, it’s just I don’t know what to say, and you know, when you meet big people, you don’t know what to do, and I don’t want to be creepy or anything, but…

Sol raises a fist and pulls a confidant smile. Excited, Jones’ fist automatically smacks against her head, sending vibrations through the room, several tools clattering on the ground while the superhuman stood still. Jones is both flabbergasted and horrified at the same time.

JONES

…oh shit…

I-I’m sorry, I didn’t know why…

SOL

It didn’t hurt a bit. Trust me, I’ve had worse.

JONES

Oh, the radioactive titan robot was my favorite!

ELIZBAETH

The cleanup was quite arduous, though. Quite a lot of bodies in hospitals that day.

SOL

We all did our best that day.
(to Jones)

I’m certain you all excelled in your performances.

JONES

Oh, we were just doing our job. And I still am, apparently.

SOL

You’ve become quite famous, Officer. It’s not every day a supernatural entity is on our side.

Though, with all respect, I do find your methods too effective for their own good.

JONES

Well, the truth is…

ELIZABETH

I hate to cut this new companionship short, but I need to interview Mr. Jones about several factors regarding his condition.

I should also remind you that you have an interview about an hour with Andrew Jackson.

SOL

I’ll be there.

It was nice seeing you, Officer Joes.

JONES

Thank you very much, Sol. You’re awesome!

SOL

Thanks. Take care.

 In a flash, she’s gone.

JONES

That’s so awesome!

Um, Doc?

ELIZABETH

Yes?

JONES

Is there a TV around here?

Elizabeth doesn’t respond, but only blankly stares at him. CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT – DAY

Sol enters through the window with Moon in her arms. She fills a plate with cat food and places Moon on the ground.

SOL

Home sweet home for you. I have to leave but then we can talk a walk on the moon after that, okay?

Moon leaps onto the bed and curls up. Less than a second, and Sol is dressed in a fitting suit.

SOL

(lightly kissing Moon on the head)

Bye!

Out through the window she flies off. The following conversation is intercut with a montage of Jones putting on his uniform, shaking hands with the doctors and scientists, non-characteristically watching the view in silence as he is driven home by a taxi cab, buying groceries of dog food from a market, going home and feeding his dog while he quietly watches the sky. There is a warm smile on his face as he enjoys the peace. We don’t know what he’s going through at the moment, but we feel rest assured that there is some semblance of peace.

SOL

(clicking her ear piece)

How’s Jones?

ELIZABETH

Truth of the matter is, I believe we will have to hire someone with more insight into the occult. Officer Jones is essentially a trapped corpse.

SOL

Does that mean you’ll try and send him back to hell?

ELIZABETH

That’s not in my position. His record wasn’t the cleanest; in fact, any signs of rehabilitation, whether from substance abuse or trafficking seems to have slowed down in his last few days. By then, it was too late.

SOL

How do you think he’ll take it?

ELIZABETH

I will admit, he’s quit the character.

SOL

Did he do anything before he left?

ELIZBAETH

He asked for a TV to watch your interview; I refused.

SOL

Politely?

ELIZABETH

Persuasively.

SOL

Is there a huge difference for you?

ELIZABETH

That’s for you to find out.

Sol lightly chuckles. What follows is a montage that cuts between the interview with Andrew Jackson, a conversation between Sol and Elizabeth, and previously introduced characters watching the interview with a mixture of curiosity, mistrust, neutrality, and anxiety.

ELIZABETH

Shall we rehearse the questions?

SOL

Again.

ELIZABETH

Yes, again.

JACKSON

(in English)

How do most people react when they see you face to face?

SOL

Usually, at first, they are awed because I suppose they still try to process what it is they are seeing. But after a while, when they realize what they are seeing is true, I suppose, they do feel more comfortable.

JACKSON

Did any of them have a different reaction, such as, let’s say, fear?

SOL

Mostly on my first cases, and most of the public, were still in disbelief about my existence, but I think not only when I appeared, but when several other strange phenomena appeared, and by the time SYMPAN was founded, people have become used to it.

JACKSON

Now, some would say that your presence ushered in a new golden age, a renaissance if you will, of new scientists, artists, and politicians discovering new methods to progress their respective fields to the next step. Some would disagree, however and claim that not only are several noteworthy problems in the world, such as conflicts in the middle east or the continued existence of cancer still persist, but might actually be in worse condition because of your existence. What is your view about that?

SOL

Well, to be quite honest, I believe regardless of the day and age, fields of art and medicine will always advance no matter what event is occurring their windows. Plus, I don’t believe that just because I exist, doesn’t automatically mean that all problems will go away. My associates and I are still searching for new life forms and trying to avert any danger that may occur.

JACKSON

You are known for your pacifist approach towards threats, whether they are direct or indirect, and you don’t pledge your allegiance to any specific country. Why is that?

SOL

Because I learned from my mistakes in the past. When I first started out, I tried to ally myself to one point of view that cost others pain. I’m sure you know what I’m referring to, Mr. Jackson.

JACKSON

(nods)

Right.

SOL

Therefore, I realize, or at least believe, that should I use the full potential of my abilities, I wish to be certain that it’s only possible when a certain line is crossed and there are no other solutions.

As for my allegiances to a specific country, call me paranoid if you will, but I suspect that whoever I assign myself to will command me into invading and crippling other countries and possibly sabotage any attempts to form alliances out of ignorance based on the fact that they superhuman on their side. If I had aligned myself to others, I wouldn’t be doing half of what I am doing, and Levin Mashkov and Victor Akunin could have died and took out a suburbia with them.

CUT TO:

INT. PLANE, BACK DECK – DAY

Young pilot Juan Rodriguez watches the interview from his phone.

JACKSON

I really do wish we could have continued, but for now, our time’s up. Sol, thank you for coming here, we really appreciate it.

SOL

(shaking hands)

Thank you, Mr. Jackson.

JACKSON

And with that said, thank you for another episode of Beautiful Morning. I’m Andrew Jackson and farewell.

The voice of SIDE STEEN gets his attention.

STEEN

(in Danish)

Juan, it’s time.

JUAN

(in Mexican)

Yes, sir.

The back door opens while he enters a peculiar shaped pod and presses several buttons, activating it.

STEEN

How are we feeling?

JUAN

(cocky)

Are we getting this show on the road or what?

BRIDGE BUNNY #1 (Voice)

Connection link in effect.

BRIDGE BUNNY # 2 (Voice)

Mechanisms online.

BRIDGE BUNNY # 3 (Voice)

Commence takeoff.

LEE

Satisfied?

JUAN

More than you can imagine.

LEE

Good luck, soldier.

He drives to the edge and plops down. At first glance, it looks like a surefire way to jump to your death.

Until something heavy blows through the wind and Juan is inside a cockpit.

BRIDGE BUNNY # 2

Check…

Alpha 00 is ready to go.

A giant white mecha robot soars to the clouds and ten launches to its destination. CUT TO:

INT. CHURCH – NIGHT

A young Nigerian man is confessing to his Samaritan, FATHER BORG.

BORG

(in Swedish)

(calm)

So, after all these needless murders, all those blackmails and rapes, you wish for forgiveness from the Holy Father himself?

NIGERIAN

(in Nigerian)

(quietly sobbing)

Father, I want to be a good man. Please, please, help me. At least advise me where to start, where to go. That’s all I want.

BORG

You wish for a sign.

NIGERIAN

Yes, yes!

Pause. The wind blows, turning off some of the candles.

BORG

Some of the candles have gone out. I need to lighten them.

NIGERIAN

Sure.

Borg gets up and leaves.

BORG

Forgiveness is essential, young man. It is where the true foundation lies, right in the center of it all.

He walks to the unsuspecting Nigerian’s side.

BORG

God has granted you his signal.

He opens the door and when the Nigerian looks up, an axe comes down on him.

CUT TO BLACK

THE END
