Chapter Nineteen: In the Dark

I looked upon the coffin with The Matal, Lucy, Ella and Alina. Jacob and John were looking at other coffins (Jacob with all of his close friends too ).

We looked upon it. On the coffin was engraved:

Here Lies Natalie L. Righter

Oceankeeper

Good Friend, good soldier.

We looked upon the coffin. I tried not to cry, but tears slowly rolled down my face. Ella and Alina were heartbroken too. We were all incredibly close.

When it was time, The Matal and I went on a small stage and gave speech. I did a lot of talking. Lucy stayed behind the stage. When we were done, Lucy asked, “Can I walk around a bit?”

“I’ll go with her.” offered Jacob.

“Okay. Just listen to Jacob.” I said.

Lucy nodded, and they walked off.

I paid my respects to others, and even spoke to some families. I told them I’d make sure their families were well taken care of. I intended to keep my promises very true.

“I know this might be hard.” said The Matal when I revisited Natalie’s coffin. “But she’d want you to move on, past the pain.”

“I know she would too.” I said. “She was always strong. But I don’t want her to be forgotten.”

“She never will.” said The Matal.

That’s when a cry rang out from the crowd. I looked over. Jacob was over Lucy, arguing with a gravitio.

“She’s perfectly fine!” insisted Jacob.

“Prove it!”

“I warn you-” growled Jacob

The gravitio held up his hand. Jacob was sent flying. When he landed into a building, he was knocked unconscious. Lucy was defenseless.

I tried to rush to her, but it wa too late. The gravitio took out a club.

“Prove your majic, little rat.” he snarled.

With that, he raised the club and began to bring it down. Lucy brought up a hand, and then, when the club touched it, a wave of darkness shot him back into some coffins.

Now The Matal and I were really trying. I sent a wave of light. As if on autopilot, they made a path.

I rushed to Lucy, The Matal right behind me. Dark ribbons were still coming out of her hands.

The crowd was in a riot. Heartrenders and fireals kept them back. Two heatenders went to the gravitio to arrest him. Alina and Ella went to grab Jacob. John was nowhere to be seen.

Lucy was sobbing. I took her chin and made her look at me.

“Look at me.” I instructed. “It’s okay. No one’s going to hurt you.”

“Help me.” she sobbed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing is.” I said. “You are you.”

I summoned some light. Instantly, the darkness disappeared. I helped her up. The crowd was demanding to have her killed, thrown out, or worse.

“Enough!” I roared. “I will not bow to such commands! Now everyone get back to their original stations now!”

The crowd scat quickly. I asked Alina if Jacob would be okay.

“Ella took him to the infirmiry. She said he broke his back, three ribs and a leg, cracked his skull, and probably will sit in a coma for a few days until he’s healed.” said Alina. “But he’ll be back in a few days, a week at most.”

“Okay. Take Lucy to the house. Don’t let any strangers in. Only answer to us, okay?” I said.

“Alright.” she said.

Lucy clung to me. “No. Please.”

“I’ll be there soon.” I said. “Trust me.”

Then, The Matal took a knife out of his pocket.

“Keep it.” he said, handing it to Lucy. “You’ll be okay.”

She nodded and left with Alina.

The Matal and I went into the regular building.

“Can I-”

“Is there anywhere we can talk privately?” The Matal ordered.

“Second to top floor is open.” the desk lady offered.

We rushed up the stairs. When we got into the room, I sat on a chair, while The Matal paced the floor.

“What did he do to her?” I asked.

“He couldn’t have done it. It’s impossible.” he said. “My brother was always a tester in magic but this? Even he couldn’t do it.”

“Are you saying that this came naturally?” I asked. “That she can summon darkness?”

“Maybe more.” he said. “Maybe less. If only I heard the prophecy once more.”

I took a breath. “How?”

“I don’t know. The original copy was burnt down with the Temple.” said The Matal.

“So, she is…”

“Original? Pure? Yes. The Dark One must’ve known she was untrained when he discovered it. He then used her.” said The Matal.

“What can we do?” I  asked.

“Again, wait and see. You must teach her how to control her powers. Otherwise she is a threat.”

“Are you calling her dangerous?” I asked.

“Stacy, untrained majics are extremely dangerous. She’s already been controlled before.” said The Matal. “But we can’t conceal it. It’s dangerous.”

I locked myself upstairs in my bedroom, a wave of emotion rolling through me. I laid on the bed and close my eyes.

Think, Stacy, Think!

All of a sudden, I felt a pull. I took a breath. The pull inside of me was almost like a call, and I answered.

I opened my eyes. At the end of the bed was The Dark One.

“Interesting.” he said. “Very. Tell me, how did my brother teach you to do this?”

“He didn’t.” I replied, sitting up a bit.

“Hmm.” he thought. “Interesting.”

“Did you copy your powers to my sister?” I asked.

“No, actually.” he grinned. “She was an uncovered treasure. Why? Finally showed you who the real her was?”

Before I could answer no, he grinned even wider. “Stacy.” he said, shaking his head as though he was disappointed. “You should know, I had to do very little to persuade her.”

“What?” I asked. “What are you talking about?”

“Oh, I didn’t take control of her.” he said. “No, no. I was going to, but at the same time, she already looked hungry for power. I don’t know why she joined your side- she thought you as evil. But maybe it was my mistake, saying that if you could be reckoned with, you’d be powerful. Maybe she thought it better on that side.”

My stomach dropped with every word.

“And how come I don’t think you’re lying?” I asked.

He grinned. “I think you already know.”

I looked at him. “How did you get-”

“Oh, I have my spies.” he said. “And I think John would be a very valuable hostage.”

With another grin, he broke the connection.

I got up, and bounded out of the room.

“Lucy!” I called.

“Yes?” she called back.

I went downstairs. They, including The Matal, were in the living room.

I took a breath, and felt my heart crumple as I said, “Get me a guard.”

Alina looked at me. “What?”

“Get me a guard!” I ordered.

Alina stared, but then left.

I raised my hand at Lucy. “Don’t you dare move.” I ordered her. “The rest of you, get away from her.”

The Matal and Ella looked stunned. “What in the world are-”

“Now!” I ordered.

As they moved away, Alina returned with two heartrenders.

“Guards, arrest her.” I ordered.

The moved to Lucy. They grabbed her. She tried to fight, but then I snapped my fingers. Instantly she was asleep.

“Put her in a cell under heavy guard.” I ordered. “Right now.”

They dragged her away. The others stared at me, stunned and baffled.

“What the hell was that about!?” cried Ella after a moment of pure shock.

“I… nothing.” I stammered, not believing what I had done either.

“What did you-” Alina was cut off by The Matal.

“Who did you speak to?” he ordered.

I took a few deep breaths. “Someone.” I said, still trying to conceal it.

He rolled his eyes, took my hand, and lead me upstairs, leaving Ella and Alina standing there, completely confused.

He put me inside our bedroom and locked the door. Then he turned to me.

“What have you done?” he growled.

I don’t know what kind of angry this was. I’ve seen him yell, roar like a lion, try to conceal it, but this? This was madness at a top level. How was I supposed to respond to this?

“I-I-I don’t really know.” I said.

“Did you use gratyoa?” he asked, instantly on to me.

“You said it was-”

“Does it matter?” he asked. “He knows where we are!”

“He’s in Britain! He can’t!” I yelled. “Yes, I exchanged words! His men inside our networks took John hostage. Haven’t you wondered where he went? That’s how I knew he was telling the truth!”

“My brother is good at lies.” he said. “John could be anywhere.”

“Your brother told me that he didn’t use gratyoa on my sister.” I said. “When he found her power, he persuaded her to work for him! I can’t trust her right now!”

He stopped. “What did you just say?” he asked.

“She worked for him.” I said. “She was never under gratyoa. You can’t just break the power like that. I… I am under gratyoa. I can get into his head. I can bring him to me, like he did to me. And… it felt-”

“You can’t.” he said, taking my hands. “Stacy, it’s dangerous. You could be destroyed by it. I can’t lose you too.”

“It might be my only way to win this war.” I said. “A queen must protect her people, no matter the costs. And I must be willing to make those costs.”

“But not now. You’re people need you alive right now.” he said. He let out a frustrated breath. “I can’t lose you.”

I embraced him. “You won’t.” I whispered.
