1.Just Be Yourself

“Just be yourself”,

You tell me

And everyone will

Love me

I’ll float through

The sky

Be honored

By all

And everyone

Will adore me

But you must’ve

Forgotten I'm black

And my experiences

Stand before me

Because I've

Been through this before

How can I freely express myself

When I know

What is in store

Everyone is well – intentioned

And unaware when they're offensive

And no one really wants to

Understand you

Unless you fit into

Their perspective

I’m the black guy here

So, all eyes are on

Every action I make

As if they're hoping

I make a mistake

But there are no eyes

On the person I am

Am I a disgrace?

Because I do not

Fit into the traditional box

You have of my race?

Allow me to

Take a step back

I just need some space

-But then I'm labelled

Emotional, or too sensitive

Because they never meant it

That way

I'm supposed to smile,

Laugh and be polite

As you spit in my face

I'm expected not to

Be distant

And stand there

With a smile

On my face
