Aral

Waves undulate in slow motion,

acrid sand dunes shift aside.

Plagued by dry rot and corrosion,

iron beasts await the tide.

Water drained for crops of cotton,

pesticides bled farmer’s logic.

Ships were left behind, forgotten,

the sea was left poisoned and caustic.

Vessels grounded on the incline

of the dried-out, slaughtered seabed

were left with none but crusty brine,

splintered sides, and rotting bulkheads.

Stranded in this cemetery,

denied the honor of being buried.
