Long ago on a far away land, there lived two sisters who were meant for great things. There was Esther; the kindhearted and willful eldest who someday will inherit her father’s throne. And then there was Rita, the youngest; who longed to be like her sister and be favored by her father.

From a very young age both sisters were taught to battle. They were trained as potential queens. Rita knew she didn’t have a shot at being queen unless Esther was to die or deemed unfit.

Rita resented her sister for being favored by their parents. She thought she’d be a better a queen because she wanted it more.

One day, the unfortunate happened. On a voyage to the new and unexplored world, the queen and king; parents of Esther and Rita sadly perished.

The sisters were deeply devastated and grieving.  And at only eighteen years of age, Esther was crowned the new queen much to Rita’s dismay.

Then one night, Rita came up with a heinous plan. She walked into her sister’s bedroom as Esther slept peacefully and with a smile on her face she jumped from Esther’s balcony into darkness.

Rita knew she would survive the fall into the water; she was a good swimmer but pretended not to be. When she was rescued she said Esther had pushed her in. Feeling surprised and disgusted, the people of this kingdom banished Esther from their land for being an evil sister. Rita smiled in all her glory, for she was the new queen now.

As a year went by, Rita’s kingdom was falling apart. She realized she wasn’t very good in making decisions like her sister was. Her people were starving. And she began to miss and cry over the good sister she once had.

Rita searched for her sister far and wide and found her alone and sad living in a small cottage in the woods.

 “Sister”, she cried.

“Please forgive me for everything I’ve done, you must return, our people are starving!”

Esther was depressed and so angry with Rita, that she didn’t turn to look at her until Rita cried and begged her dear sister for forgiveness.

“I am sorry, sister; please punish me at your will. I admit I was wrong”, Rita says. “Oh Rita, all I ever did was love you”, Esther spoke.

“How can you have betrayed me the way you did?”

“You let our people believe I tried to kill my own sister. Our kingdom was everything I had as a legacy from our dear parents. You have tainted their memory”, there was a tear that rolled down Esther’s cheek.

“Oh, sister, I know how badly I have been to you. I am ashamed, truly and I lament greatly everything that I have done”, Rita cried.

“My dearest Rita, I wouldn’t be worthy of my crown if I can’t forgive”, Esther smiles as she holds her sister’s face in her hands.

“I love you more than anything, sister, I vow to give you my loyalty always”, Rita says.

“All I need is your love and devotion, my dear”, Esther smiles.

The people of the kingdom decided to forgive Rita just like her sister did. And Esther proved to be a noble and generous queen. And with her sister by her side, their kingdom was a beautiful one.
