"I'm telling you doctor, she was there. She tried to kill me!" Cadence explained. The doctor nodded as he dressed her arm. "Your scratches are deep, but you don't need any stitches, Cadence. Just make sure you change the bandages once a day and take two aspirin if the pain gets too unbearable," the doctor said as he helped her up. Cadence nodded and walked out of the doctor's office. She slowly walked back to her place, lost in thought. How could she have gotten in? Cadence thought to herself. My windows are always closed and locked and so is the door. Yet she still got into my home and my bedroom. She almost got me this time but next time, I'll be prepared. She won't get me. She won't! She won't! Cadence kicked off her shoes and threw her jacket on the chair in front of her desk. Tired out from last night's attack, Cadence laid down on her bed and closed her eyes. Hearing a creaking noise a few hours later, she tossed her light brown hair out of her almond shaped eyes and reached out to turn the lamp on. "I wouldn't do that if I were you, Cadence," a voice rasped. "You'll spoil my little surprise if you turn on the light." Cadence started to shake with fear as the voice kept getting closer and closer. "It's time to finish what I started long ago, Cadence. Now the time has come for you to be banished to the shadow lands and for me to resume your place here," the voice said menacingly. "Noooooo!" Cadence screamed as loud as she could. Reaching out, she turned the lamp on. Looking around her, she noticed that she was the only one in the whole place. Where could she have gone? Cadence wondered as she looked around her room. Slowly climbing out of bed, she slipped a pair of slippers on her feet and stood near the end of the bed. Out of the shadows dwelling underneath the box spring, Cadence heard the unmistakable sound of menacing laughter. Before she could move, two hands darted out from under the bed and pulled Cadence down to the floor. Before she could scream, her hunter crawled out slowly, her eyes sparkling with murderous rage. "Now it's your turn to live in the darkness, Cadence! Forever more you will be imprisoned in the shadow lands while I get to live once more in the world." Cadence shook her head vigorously and tried to break free. The crazy woman had on tight as Cadence tried to break free. Shaking her short light brown hair that she had dyed to match Cadence's hair, the lunatic grinned and dragged Cadence under the bed. Cadence let out with the loudest, longest scream that she ever let out before as the darkness surrounded her. Her attacker chuckled as she crawled out of the shadows and stood up in the room. "I'm free at last!" She cried victoriously. "Noooooo," Cadence moaned. Pulling herself painfully out from under the bed, she grabbed her attacker by the ankles and pulled her face first onto the floor. "You can't do this to me! I will destroy you first!" The crazed woman friends she tried to break out of Cadence's grip. Cadence reached out and grasped a base bat she kept by her bed. Raising it high up, she brought swiftly down on the crazed woman's skull. Over and over she kept swinging the bat as hard as she could, ignoring the shrieks and howls of agony and pain. When at last no sound could be heard from the broken body laying on the carpeted floor, Cadence stood up and wiped her blood stained eyes. "She's gone for good now," she whispered. "She won't try to kill me anymore." Sighing in relief, Cadence went into the bathroom and washed the blood off. When she came back out, she put on a clean nightgown and stepped over the lifeless broken body that lay in front of her bed. The next morning, a knock on her door awakened her. She sat up and sang out," Come in come in whoever you are!" A stout young woman in a starch white uniform entered, carefully balancing a tray laden with Cadence's breakfast and her medicine. "Cadence, I brought you breakfast. After you eat, you have to take your medicine immediately. You forgot to take them yesterday and I got into trouble because of it," the nurse said rather harshly. As she turned around, she noticed Cadence smiling happily at something on the floor. Following Cadence's stare, the nurse looked horrified as she realized she was looking at a broken lifeless corpse. Screaming in terror, the nurse ran out of the room yelled for security. They came quickly and restrained Cadence who seemed to be in a strange catatonic state. "She tried to kill me last night. She was going to send me to the shadow lands and take my place but I got her first. Now she can't hurt me anymore," she kept repeating over and over. The doctor came in a few moments later and managed to identify the body on the floor. It was Cadence's roommate who lay there lifeless, her face and skull a pile of bone, and tissue mixed with blood and skin. He stared at the body, then at Cadence and said quietly," Take Cadence to Ward D and take the body to the morgue. I'll deal with everything that has to be done." The three security guards nodded and took Cadence away. Two ordered entered the room and, after placing the body into a sheet, wheeled it off to the morgue. The nurse that had discovered the bloody corpse was given paid leave time from her job until she found a better place to work. The doctor had Cadence placed in a padded cell and had sessions with her every day. Cadence told him about the violent encounters she had with her roommate and how she finally got the courage to stop her before she could destroy Cadence. The doctor asked quietly," Cadence, why would your roommate want to kill you?" Cadence's eyes glazed over. She said distantly," But doctor, it wasn't my roommate who tried to hurt me. It was Marielle who tried to banish me to the shadow lands. Not my roommate Kailley. Kailley would never hurt me in any way because she's my best friend and roommate. The one who I killed was Marielle." The doctor shook his head as he stared in puzzlement at Cadence. "Can you tell me about Marielle? Was she a friend to you and decided to not be friends anymore? Or was she a relative of yours?" Cadence giggled and replied," Silly doctor. Marielle is my daughter. She's about sixteen years old now and lives with her grandmother. I saw her last night when she tried to kill me." The doctor nodded as if he understood what she was talking about. He ended the session and walked out of the padded room. Back in the confines of his office, the doctor flipped through Cadence's folder, looking for any sign of her having a daughter. He found out she did indeed have a daughter by the name of Marielle by the girl had committed suicide at age fifteen by overdosing on her mother's antidepressant medicine. Cadence found Marielle the next morning, curled up on the floor and cold to the touch. Efforts to revive her daughter failed and Cadence lost it. She screamed at her only child to wake up and stop fooling around because it wasn't funny at all. When yelling didn't work, Cadence started to beat Marielle's corpse. She didn't stop until the paramedics arrived and had to wrestle her away from her dead daughter. Shortly after Marielle's funeral, Cadence was found in the cemetery with blood and dirt covering her from head to toe. She had tried to dig her daughter up and became so distraught that she ripped all of her hair our and cut her wrists in the attempt joining her child in the shadow lands. Soon after being released from the hospital, Cadence was sentenced to spend an indeterminable amount of time at Blue Meadow State Hospital to receive help for her emotional and mental breakdowns. After reading the entire file, the doctor concluded that Cadence was suffering from guilt associated paranoia and am acute case of post traumatic stress disorder. In his way of thinking, Cadence brought Marielle back to life in her mind because she felt guilty about not being able to save her daughter in time. To Cadence, her daughter was angry for letting her die and wanted her mother to suffer and then join her in a way. Even though Cadence had made significant progress off and on during the ten years she had been institutionalized, she kept relapsing back into her psychosis state. Now that she had "killed" Marielle, Cadence relapsed once more and has been unable to snap out of it. The doctor visits her every day as she sits alone in her padded room. She pays no attention to the post all; instead she sits in the middle of the room, rocking back and forth while holding conversations with her dead daughter. Cadence remains in the padded room in Ward D of the hospital. She has made no progress at all and will remain there until the say she dies and joins her daughter Marielle in the shadow lands. The End
