Annie is living in a maturation center where part of the therapy includes reliving her past by means of an apparatus called a Lifeviewer. The viewer actually records the resident's thoughts,
including a pictoral representation. Annie resents this intrusion into her life and wages a private rebellion against life at Winterhaven. There is a presence essence machine in each room, designed
to give the residents the impression that they are never alone. Annie refuses to be taken in by such trickery and finally comes face to face with the truth of her existence.
