Naive?

This morning, I happened to hear something on the news which really made me mad. Could be that I am totally naive because I thought people were becoming slightly less bigoted, more accepting of each other.

Okay, let me explain. It was a report from a boat show in England; Southampton, I think. Anyway the reporter was looking around at some of the boats and was talking to the boss of one of the manufacturers there. They were looking at a more ‘accessible model’ in their range, with a more affordable price tag of £8 million. Now that in itself was outrageous enough, but when questioned about who was in the market for such boats, he answered that it was a range aimed at providing ‘quality time with quality people.’

Since when does material wealth make someone a ‘quality person’? And what is the definition of a ‘quality person’ anyway? Clearly to this person it means someone with way too much money; and that anyone having less money is definitely worth less as a person.

I had hoped that this attitude of bigotry and superiority was a thing of the past; or at least that those who held those views were a bit more closed mouthed about it all. Apparently not! It’s okay to go on national TV and say these things, and to not feel any shame or guilt about doing so.

To me this is just one more indication of the backwards path society is now on. Intolerance is ‘in’ again. Homelessness is almost at epidemic levels, poverty has increased dramatically, and ‘quality’ people have £millions to spend, just to give an extra boost to their over-inflated egos.

Okay, I’m naive, I admit it. But it still made me sick!
