The Burden of Knowing

For as long as I can recall I have been able to see the truth in others.

I can discriminate between the eloquent lexicon and the underlying sentiments.

The unspoken words and shadows of fear, racism, envy and disgust .

The tension which others fail to notice; is crystal clear to me.

Like watching a foreign film.

The words and emotions appear out of sync.

I can hear what they do not have the courage to say.

I can feel the hatred on my skin that they are trying to censor before it reaches the air.

I can touch the fear in their minds  that lives just below the smile on their face.

It is a painful insight.

One that weighs upon me and makes me wish to remain alone.

A burden of recognition.
