Lock And Key

I put in place the barriers,

the fences and the walls.

My heart would be impervious

to any other bumps and falls.

I bought myself a padlock,

that only had one key,

the only person with it --

well, that would be just me.

No more pain and no more hurt,

my heart was now defended,

no more bullets, no more cuts,

and no more being rended.

So maybe I’d get lonely

in my chosen isolation,

but I am now impervious

to this hostile situation.

But then you came and breached them,

my so well constructed walls;

you made so many footholds that

they soon began to fall.

I don’t want to lose my barricades,

don’t want them turned to dust,

so I’ve thought up a solution

that really is a must.

I’ve been to see the locksmith,

I took with me my key,

I asked him to make a copy

and he gave them both to me.

This extra key I give to you,

the access to my heart,

for you are so important now

and never will we part.

This is beautiful. It is so much easier to board ourselves up to avoid anymore pain and heartache, but there are people out there worth opening up to and risk being vulnerable for. It's difficult figuring out who to trust and who to hold at a distance these days, but when you meet someone worthy of that key, it's easy to see.
