“Time”

Time got stuck

today

it sat

straddling the present

with a leg

on each side

of it

as the future

tried to pull it

ahead

while it was still

tied to the past,

time

didn’t seem to

care

if it moved forward

or fell behind

it was just tired

of always being

misunderstood,

time

never runs out

on anyone

I always stand

my ground

I never play favorites

there is no

your time

or my time

why do people insist

I take sides

Yells time

as the future

tugs even harder

trying to move

time along,

why do you always

have to be

in such a hurry

quips the past

at the future

time is always

marching on-ward

if he wants to

take a little break

he’s earned it

you go ahead

and stand still

time

future

isn’t so bright

he’s nothing

without you,

thanks past

says time

you always

have my back

time swung his

left leg

over the present

and slid down

it’s side

then leaned back

against it

and stared straight

ahead

not into the

future

or back towards

the past

but in a new direction

for it to ponder

for the very first

time

why must I

always be tied

to the past

or heading towards

the future

today

I am going to

find my own way,

Aw,

come on time

said the future

quit messing about

or we’ll be late,

don’t worry

laughs the past

we got plenty

of “time”

the future gives

past

an icy stare

before pleading with

time

to continue on

its way,

hey time

I see the way

you look at

tomorrow

says the future

I know you have

a thing for her

I see her every

day

I could put in

a good word

for you

time stood up

just at the mention

of tomorrow

the past

who is starting

to like this

much extended break

says

time

she’s not for you

always acting so

entitled

having to make

a grand entrance

with the sun

everywhere she goes

what do you say

we spend a week

right here

and I’ll introduce

you to yesterday

she’s been following

you around

for years

let’s just wait here

for her to catch-up

and I’ll make sure

you’ll be glad

you did,

time stood their

thinking about his

options

he did like

tomorrow

but the past

was right

he has never

even been able

to get her to

come one step

in his direction

and yesterday

well

she was cute

and all that

but wasn’t very

driven

no goals

in her life

content to just

lag behind,

time

stood their thinking

as the past

kept egging him on

to just stay put

the future

who has been

quite

for a while now

finally says

I’ll tell you what

time

how about a wager

if I can guess

the number you

chose

between

one and ten

then you go

double time

till we make up

our lost time

if I don’t

I’ll be quite

for ten years

no matter what

you do,

time

looked at future

unsure

what his angle

was

what about guessing

between

one and fifty

time asks

ok, says future

but then

you have to go

fifty years

without stopping,

don’t do it time

says past

he’s up to something,

make it between

one and a thousand

and you got a deal

time blurts out

feeling like he

trapped

future

ok then

says future

in a very calm

and steady voice

but remember

that’s one thousand

straight years

of non-stop marching

to you

if I win,

yea,

or

one thousand

quite years

when you lose

says time,

past is screaming

Don’t do it time

Don’t do it

It’s a trap

but time

is already thinking

of a number

confident

in his ability

to beat future,

just write

your number down

and I’ll make

my guess,

time

over thinking

his choice

of number

pulls a black

marker

and a piece

of paper

from his pocket

turns his back

to future

and writes down

what he is sure

is the winning

number

he turns back

around

and says

GUESS,

future

does not even

hesitate

and barks out

714

time is stunned

that’s right

mumbles time

as he checks

and then

rechecks

his piece of paper

that’s impossible

says past

he must of cheated

want to go again

time

asks future

another thousand

years

if you lose

but if you win

you win the game,

don’t do it

whispers past

totally caught up

in the excitement

of the game,

Ok

one more try

says time

he turns around

writes down

his number

and then

faces future

you ready

says future

time nods yes

I need you to

verbally say it

shrugs future

legal purposes,

Ready

shouts time

33

replies future

in less than a

second

time collapses

against the present

and weakly asks

how did you guess

the number

twice,

I am the future

I always know

any answer

before you,

past

jumping up

and down

screaming

I knew it was

a trap

I knew it,

time

sat back down

on the present

started to tighten

the laces

on his boots

then stood up

and returned to

his never ending

march forward

and as his boots

hit the ground

on his very

first step

future

turns his head

around

and shouts back

Oh

and by the way

time

you didn’t stand

a chance of

catching tomorrow

as he reaches

into his pocket

and pulls out a

harmonica

clears his throat

blows into the

harmonica

and then

starts singing

in the cord of C

“Tomorrow, Tomorrow”

“You won’t catch Tomorrow”

“She’s always a day away”

the future

continues to sing

his version of the

classic song

“Tomorrow”

as time

lowers his head

and starts trekking

forward

as the past

joins in to the

made up song,

time yells back

at past

knock it off past

one of you singing

is bad enough

but it’s such

a catchy tune

says past

as he joins

back in with

future

as they both

belt out

the refrain

“Tomorrow Tomorrow”

“You won’t catch Tomorrow”

“She’s always”

“A day away”…
