All Seeing

The room was dimly lit, bordering on dark. It was round, ringed with desks, keybaords and monitors. There were eight separate screens evenly spaced around the room, so big that they covered almost all of the wall. In the center of the room there was a round desk, with a circular monitor on top of it, appearing like a very large orb.

In front of each monitor stood a man, all very similar looking to each other. Short dark hair, medium build, medium height, they could all very well be brothers. The man at the center desk was older, taller, beginning to go grey. But it was he that exuded authority; it was he who was clearly in charge.

Each man was fully focused on the screen in front of him. They all seemed to be oblivious to anything else in the room. Fingers occasionally flew across keyboards, clicking buttons as they went, but otherwise the room was silent. Nobody spoke; nobody even coughed or cleared their throats. The tension was palpable.

Then it began; a humming, thrumming noise. It was hard to put a finger on exactly where in the room it was coming from, but all of a sudden there was a rainbow of flickering lights eerie appearance . The central orb flashed rapidly as the older man walked around it.

Magenta?” His voice seemed to echo around the room. One of the monitors began to glow steadily, casting a magenta hue to the dim light.

Magenta established,” a voice replied, unnecessarily but clearly part of the agreed protocol.

Turquoise?”

The bright blue-green streaked out, mixing with the magenta to both strike the orb at different spots.

Amber?”

An orange hue joined and a voice said, “Amber established.”

Lilac?” The man at the center was being lit up in all colors while those at the monitors were bathed in the shades of their own screens.

Emerald?”

Emerald up and running, Sir.”

Chartreuse?”

Lime?”

Crimson?”

Crimson on line, Sir!”

Each of the screens now glowed in their own color, sending strong rays to mix and swirl together in a rainbow dance backwards and forwards across the orb, and across the man who stood in front of it. The humming increased in volume, rising in pitch. Whether it was actually moving or not, the circular screen appeared to be rapidly revolving. The whole effect was one of psychedelia rather than of science until suddenly everything went silent and black.

With a click the central eye opened. The nine men in the room gave a collective sigh of relief then turned to watch their screens. The seconds ticked past and suddenly the screens blinked on with number after number chasing each other from one side to the other. Every single bit of global on-line activity was now being monitored in that one single room, along with every text, message and phone-call.

The man in charge allowed his face to relax for a moment. Operation Big Brother had successfully launched. "The All Seeing Eye is now on line," he said with a great deal of satisfaction.
