Veronica Bane had many secrets; one was that she was a victim of domestic violence. She has been married to Mr. Bane for twelve years now and they share a precocious eleven-year-old boy. Mr. Bane wasn’t always violent with Veronica. There was a time when they were both happy. There was a time when veronica thought she hit jackpot in meeting and marrying Mr. Bane. But a year after their son was born, Veronica discovered Mr. Bane’s common infidelities, and she realized she was living a lie. Veronica used to be conscious and perhaps a sympathetic woman until…

Upon learning of her husband’s mistress—Veronica decided to leave with her child and pursue divorce. But Mr. Bane was not the type of man to let that happen. He made sure she knew that. Mr. Bane’s family was a pretty wealthy one and money, money well, can make miracles happen, especially in court and with custody agreements. Veronica decided very reluctantly to stay for the sake of her child. And from here on, her life became a living hell. Mr. Bane became very abusive once he realized that he had his wife wrapped around his finger and there was nothing she could do about it. But this wasn’t Veronica’s only secret—her other secret was one nobody knew.

For months, however in the Bane household—tragedy began to strike when Mr. Bane fell ill one night complaining about pain in his knees and constant headaches. Veronica despite of everything soothed her sick husband. Mr. Bane became more violent. Nobody knew what was causing him the headaches and vomiting.

“Would you like some more lemon tea, darling?” Veronica would ask her suffering husband as he sat on the couch crouching with pain.

“Yes! Give me the damn tea! This is what you want, right?”

“For me to just fall over and die you whore!” he yelled.

Veronica took a deep breath; she was already used to the constant battering. She had mastered the art of being submissive.

Her husband began to deteriorate as the months went by. It began with the constant headaches, and the vomiting. Then the sallow and pale look all over his body and the drowsiness that also created confusion. So many hours turned to days and weeks sitting in an ER and doctors had no answers as to why this was happening to Mr. Bane. His parents were beside themselves and even Veronica was affected. She began to care for him around the clock. He became increasingly violent and she hid more and more bruises until he had no strength anymore. Mr. Bane couldn’t even stand up or rationalize. His kidneys began to fail, as well and the doctors were as confused as everyone else around him.

“This is your fault; you never knew how to care for my poor boy! You did this to him, you stressed him out too much”, Mr. Bane’s mother would shout to Veronica. Veronica only nodded and kept her mouth shut.

It has been six months and Mr. Bane’s condition only worsens even further. He has even lost the ability to speak but Veronica knows he can understand her very well.

“This will all be over soon, darling, I promise”, Veronica whispers in her husband’s ear as he sits with his legs submerged in the bath she made for him.

Mr. Bane stared at her ominous smile, he tried very hard to articulate the words but he couldn’t. It was at that point he understood that he was at her mercy and Veronica no longer had any mercy for him left.

“Do you want some more tea, dear”? She asked him while gently scrubbing his back.

She stared at him and smiled slightly.

“You love that lemon tea I make you, honey, don’t you?” she says to him while kissing his forehead very softly.

Mr. Bane’s heart starts to race uncontrollably, he tries very hard to speak but he just manages to moan and groan very loudly. He stares at his wife, a peculiar look she understands very well: “You did this to me”, was the expression on his face.

“Don’t worry, darling, just a few more sips from that lemon tea and it’ll all be over”, she smirked.

Yes, Veronica Bane had many secrets—but only one that her husband knew now.
