THE IMAGINARIUM PICTURE PROMPT 28

INNER VOICE

I have an evil chatterbox that whispers in my ear,

Telling me I’m useless, filling me with fear.

I argue I am decent, insist I have a talent

But it doesn’t want to listen, tells me I’m unbalanced.

I order it to go away, “be-gone you fiendish monster,”

But this chatterbox refuses, its presence ever stronger.

I have a valid point of view, am persuasive, influential,

It tells me I am dreaming, that I am inconsequential.

I search my mind for evidence, to find its views inept,

And though I state the facts, I fail to intercept

This beast intent on crushing, my fragile self-esteem,

With unyielding persistence, until I want to scream.

So I tell myself I’m worthy, an equal human being,

Believe I can participate, on a level playing field.

But this wretched beast won’t listen, so intent on devastation,

Again I vow not to give in, to give it satisfaction.

I’ve had enough, I will dismiss this voice that taunts and scoffs,

“Look here, you trouble-maker, its time you buggered off!”
