Born a phoenix

Raised in the ashes

Of hawks and herons

Of slights and crashes

I became the stuntman

In a stage of red steel

I became the Jumpman

An urban Tarzan

I became a friend,

a brother

I became super,

a hero

I got a PHD

And ran the circuit

Lest you forget

I’ve quested far

And saved the stars

I’ve done a ton

Even tamed the sun

So why don’t I feel

Like I’ve won?

I’ve spread my name

Beyond myself

I’ve claimed this game

As my eighth or twelfth

Yet I realize I’ve ridden

On this circuit for the

120th time

Or so it feels.

I once dreamt of a sea of colors

Now I only miss a few

I once wanted to reach the stars

Now the stars are nothing new

I once wanted to guide the way

Now I don’t know what to do

Now I don’t know what to say.

I’ve been played as a puppet

Since my birth

No name, just games

Can’t I decide my own worth?

100 coins my life is worth

Or so they say,

those master hands

So today,

Once again

I will play

The role of a heron

Formed of clay
