Ignite

There was an orange hue glossing over all the mirrors in the city. It was that time when the sun was at its reddest. I sat atop the town squares tower, I look over to the sunset. I fondle her necklace as I let the memories wash over. The color of the sky put a kinship in my heart. Seeing the sun rise and set, the same way I day and rise. For every day that goes by, I get reborn. Looking from the edge at my feet, I see shops busy, people doing the last shopping before dinnertime. I envied all of them, having families to go back to. I tighten the grip on the necklace as the feelings wash harder. A typhoon of emotions and pain. I miss her face, it has been so long that I began to forget, I knew that there was a picture of her in the necklace but after what happened, I don’t feel like I earned the right to see it. “This is no way to live a life” I said to myself out loud. The thought was so strong that I felt the need to speak it to the world.

I watch the sun a little longer until I see a shimmer in the distance, a chunk of concrete explodes next to me making me drop my necklace from the edge. Everything feels like it slows down as I see this necklace fall. I dive in after it. I free fall trying to reach for what little I have left. The windows rush next to me as I see my own reflection. My body cracked and charted, my eyes a blaze. I fall faster and grab onto the necklace. I clench unto in tightly near my heart as I brace for the impact. A roar of pain surges through my very being as a I feel my atoms spread upon the pavement floor. When all the feeling disappears, darkness is what replaces my senses.

Ignite

I fell the process of death in reverse, how fitting, for a creature that wants to die that cant. My vision slowly returns as I pick up the necklace from the ground. My body is ablaze, no longer fizzled but in flame. I safely tuck away the necklace in my pocket and begin to run to nearest safe place. Hearing the screams of several citizens as they run from me, who can blame them, none have ever seen a phoenix, the last one that is. I run faster, feeling the bullets whiz by me and seeing them break the tile road upon impacts. I latch onto a poll and slingshot into a building, I ran inside. Taking a rest in the lobby when another bullet breaks through the window. I flip one of the tables and hide behind it. I collect my thoughts, for the small time I could, more things where getting shot around me. I look around to see the receptionist of the building looking back at me. She was backed against the wall with a petrified look on her face, as if I’m the one who just kicked her puppy. I stare at her and roll my eyes away. I hear her fumbling for her phone, “Listen lady, if you want to take a picture go right ahead, but as soon as those guys in the metal suits walk in they are just going to take you god knows where. So, if you value living somewhat of a normal life, I suggest making yourself not seen right now.” I spoke to her out loud, not looking. I was staring at the stairs, I knew I wouldn’t like it but I was going to have to resurrect again. I look back over to see the woman still backed against the wall. My eyes set alight and my voice deepens. I SAID RUN” I shout at her, and she bolts into the office door behind her. I touch the table behind me and set on fire. I only have 5 seconds before major pain was about to kick, I ran up the stairs, dodging more sniper shots. The alarms began to blare, an automated voice said, “fire prevention system, online” and then came the sprinklers. The cooling water showered over my burning skin making a terrible mixture of pain and refreshment. Climbing up the stairs, I could hear other footsteps over the pouring of liquids. I look over the railing to see them, the ones who took her from me. The men in metal armor, one of them was looking back at me smiling, he mouthed some words and some of the guys stopped climbing to open fire at my spot. One of the bullets hits my shoulder. I began to leak ash, the gripe from the shot was overshadowing the feeling of the water. I ran higher, each step slipperier than the last. I keep going to see a door leading to the fourteenth floor. I burst through the door holding my shot shoulder. Seeing many office cubicles, all the same and mundane. Heading to the window, I bounce back from trying to smash through. I can hear their footsteps coming closer as I start to panic. I grab a chair and swing it towards the window. I bash the window and the wind from the outside blows the glass in, cutting me all over. I look over the edge to see men waiting for me below. I peep my head back in as the men walk into the room, weapons drawn, fingers in triggers. I begin to raise my hands slowly, the pack of metal armors begin to open slowly to let the tall one in, the sound of slow clapping filled the mundane room. My face turns to a snarl when I see his filthy brown eyes. He claps faster as he gets closer to me. “You know, when I hit you earlier. Didn't think you had the balls are whatever it is you carry to jump from that building, let alone this one. Now indulge me for a bit, did you really think I was stupid enough to fall for the same trick twice. See, you did the same shit last time up in north city about six months back and BOY… it was hard to find you.” he began speaking at me as he paced back in forth. My eyes filled with hatred as he continued to spew the shit from his mouth. All I could see was the ashes on his hands, her ashes, the sick smile that he flashed when he did. I was lost in thought that I didn't hear the rest of his speech. He turns to me and his smile is wiped from his face, the next thing I know I’m on my knees, my face was punched. “Listen when people talk to you, or you still thinking of that other monster you're with back in north city, along with the other ones.” His words were twisting, like an angry kick with every syllable. He bends down to meet my gaze. He looks me dead in the eyes as I rub my face from where he punched. “You know, your kind is dangerous, and us normal people need to feel at peace, because as long as you are around, there will be fire.” As soon as he finishes his words, he begins to get up and attempt to say something to his comrades. “Kill him like the other one” he commanded. I start to laugh uncontrollably “we existed first, we were known through all of time, it was you who brought disease, war and famine. So if you want someone to be scared of, look in the damn mirror.” I said to him. He smiles and kicks me in the face. I black out as the soldiers get closer.

Darkness is all I feel, inside a foreign realm. My memories begin to play out, phoenix's don't get dreams, just play backs of past memories. I remember the day of creation, when we roamed in the unspoiled garden that once was this world. I remember the day met humans, some of us could fly so we were mistaken for birds in folklore but it was humans being silly. I remember the day I met her, Morgan. Her hair was burning bright neon white, and glowing green eyes. I remember her smile could burn a human man, not from the light but by the beauty.  Whenever I felt low about one thing or another, she had a hug waiting for me. We would stay up together and talk for hours. The last thing I remember I burnt the brightest when I was near her. How long will this darkness last. How can one tolerate this nothingness. Now I understand why we always come back, this is just unbearable. Why can’t I ignite again, how does one kill a phoenix. I stay trapped in thought for so long that I begin to lose track of my mind. At one point I felt like i can hear Morgan again. “Get up ya lazy bum, I miss you, come on, I know you don’t give up easy.” she said softly to me. I don’t know if I really heard her voice or I was losing it from the solitary confinement. “Hey, once you do get up, Can you open the necklace for me, it’s too stuffy” She scolded at me.

“What?” That word echoing in my mind.

“Get up, for me please” She asked, a breaking in her voice.

I try once more to get up, but I feel nothing. Again, with all my might. I DON’T WANT TO DIE ANYMORE” The thought screaming in my mind.

Ignite

I rise from the veil of death to awaken, reformed, the necklace around my neck, burning brighter.  I form in front of some soldier who now looked terrified to so me, I was inside a van, I could feel the jostling and jumping from the bumps outside. The men try to fumble for their guns but it's too late for them. “Burn” The van explodes along with me, but my own fires protected me from the blast. I rise from the wreckage, pulling pieces away from my feet. If the humans wanted a monster, they got one. A car stops in front of me, and the driver pulls out and begins to open fire at me. I see his face through the windshield. I walk up the car, taking all the bullets, the pain doesn't matter once I was done with him. He stopped firing and tried to drive back, but I tapped his wheel and it burst in heat like a balloon with too much air. The car stopped moving completely. I walk all the way to the window. I reach my hand in, melting through the glass. His eyes were full of fear. My flames turned blue, as I reached for his face. “Let me wipe that smile off your face” I said coldly. I grab unto his mouth with my burning hand and hold it there. He begins to scream and kick, trying for everything to make it stop. I wasn't going to stop until a voice broke me from my state. “DON’T DO IT, THIS ISN'T WHO I FELL IN LOVE WITH, THE MAN I LOVED ALSO LOVED HUMANS” Morgan's voice screaming in my head. The shock from her words made me let go of my hand and stagger back a bit. “Please, just let him go, trust me, he didn't kill me.”Her voice crying out again. I look at the sad man who caused me all the pain and said to him “next time I won't let go if you go after me again, I won't hurt or even come in contact with other humans, deal.” using my deep demonic once more to assert strength beyond belief. He looks at me, his eyes completely covered in tears, covering his mouth, and nods towards me in fear. I begin to walk away and going back to being charred, there's no need to burn in broad daylight.

A few hours pass as I walk in lonely alleys and generally keep to my promise. I find a safe place set down and make a camp. I take off the necklace and look at it once more. I finally felt that I had the strength to open it. When I opened it, there was no photo. Just a pinch of ash, my face almost welled in tears, I really thought she kept a picture her. I sit by the campfire alone, crying. When I notice that the ashes began to grow brightly and I hear her voice again “told you it was stuffy in there, you big crybaby”
