 Knock Out

By Zain Nofal 10UK

Christopher Smith was now in his car and was off to Seattle. He was excited because he wanted to go to his new school. He was 15 and loved to fight. He always wanted to be a boxer but his dad told him to pick a professional job. He was now in the back seat of his family’s Rover and they were off. His mom put on Spanish songs while he plugged in his earphones and watched his favorite movie, “Rocky”. He loved how they show him fight as if he was dancing  around and made his opponents mad. That was obviously not a real person but there was a person  like him, Muhammad Ali. His quote “Float like a butterfly sting like a bee” described him. Muhammad used to dance with his opponents and scare them. One of Christopher’s favorite moment was when Muhammad dodged 20 punches in 15 seconds. Christopher had gotten his first boxing gloves for Christmas and ever since he would never stop practicing and boxing. In New York he had a boxing ring in his backyard and used to play around but now he was thinking of competing in the boxing tournament in Seattle on 2018. Christopher looked out and saw the fields and then continued watching the movie. He was now lip syncing the song in the movie, “Eye of the Tiger”. His dad was an architect and so was his mother.

Few hours later he saw the sign for Seattle. They entered and first got food. They then went to their new house which was really big. It had a backyard and a front yard too. A few minutes later Christopher’s dad got a call from the people who were bringing the furniture that Christopher’s boxing ring was in a van which actually crashed and the boxing ring was burnt. After the call, Christopher’s dad told Christopher and he was very sad. Chris then remembered that he saw a boxing training club few streets away and told his parents. They agreed to get his membership there after they settled. Their furniture came after few hours and they started  unpacking. After few days the Smith family were all settled in and were happy. Christopher went to see his school and it was really great. He then reminded his parents about the Boxing club. His parents agreed and drove him to the club. The club was for 14 above and he definitely was above fourteen. They applied  and then Christopher was in. He got his membership card and walked out. The next day he went to his school and everyone was nice and he found  the studies interesting. Christopher always did good in his studies and was mostly on the honor roll. After school he went home  and lied down next to his Muhammad Ali poster. After few minutes he came downstairs and ate food. His mom made him Swedish meatballs and he had a normal conversation with his parents. He then went back up and packed his boxing shorts in his funnel bag which had a huge “Everlast” written on it. He was getting ready to go to the club. His mom drove him to the club and he thought that his life was really great. He opened the door and walked past the receptionist. He had already met the coach who was really nice and big. He looked kind of like Danny Trejo. Chris opened the door and found a boxing ring, the coach drinking tea, and some kids.

One of the kids who was taller than Chris stared at Chris and then whispered in the kid’s ear that was sitting next to him. He then let out a chuckle. The coach saw Chris and stood up. His name was Dave Harriott. Dave greeted Chris and welcomed him. They then went over some basic training and it was all normal. Chris was boxing again and it felt normal. Many days went by and everything was normal until one day in the  boxing club the coach told one kid to grab the punchbag and the other one to hit it . Chris was paired with The kid who stared at him the first day whose name was Jack. Jack held the punch bag fine and  Chris hit a couple of times. When it was Chris’s turn to hit, Jack immediately hit Chris in the face except the bag. Chris fell down and was bleeding severely. Jack just looked  and walked away. When the coach came, Jack immediately started blabbering that it was an accident when it clearly wasn’t. Chris knew this wasn’t an accident so he spoke in a loud voice. He told Dave that he was lying but Jack was denying it and gave Chris a death stare. After class Chris had to walk home because his parents were busy. While walking he heard some people behind him. When he looked back he saw Jack and his group of friends. He didn’t care but then he heard them running. When he looked back again, he saw Jack leaping onto him. Jack grabbed him and kicked him. Chris tried to get up  but Jack’s friend kicked Chris. Chris had no chance and was badly hurt. Jack then started to say how much of a loser Chris was. All Chris could do was run away so he quickly got up and ran. He ran as fast as he could with his duffel bag. He lost them and went home. He didn’t tell parents but was still hurt. The next day the same thing happened but Chris punched back and hit Jack then he ran. Jack knew that Chris could fight back so he didn’t want to mess with him physically. One day in the club the coach asked what each of the kids wanted to be when they grew up. Most kids said normal jobs but Jack said that he wanted to be a boxer and so did Chris. Jack laughed and made fun of Chris and mentally  bullied him.

In 2018 Chris left the club and joined  the tournament. He learned a lot from the club. He won the small tournament but he wanted to do more. Years past and Chris was still pursuing his dream but that night was his big night. This was the world championship. Chris had won many tournaments and was doing good. He was going against another man named Samuel Davidson. Chris was ready. As he set foot in the ring he felt the energy. He started off defending and fought a little and conserved his energy. He punched Sam in the face and knocked him out. But he got back up and fought back. This was the finals and this mattered to Chris . Chris fought 4 rounds and was exhausted. He knew one more hit from Sam and  Chris would be down and Sam himself didn’t feel that good. Then suddenly Sam decided to throw a left uppercut at Chris but Chris dodged. He closed his eyes and felt like he was in the sky like he was flying. He felt like Muhammad and  Rocky. He smiled and with all his force threw his hand at Sam. Sam flew two feet behind ,covered in blood on the ring floor. The countdown began, 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 but then Sam got back up. Chris felt like crying but the round ended. Now it was time for the judges to decide. The first judge lifted his board and it was written Chris’s name then the second judge voted for Sam and then the last judge lifted his board slowly and it was written … . Jack was also trying to pursue his dream and  he thought that he needed more practice. He didn’t watch the World Boxing Competition. He was at the EverLast boxing training facilities. The coaches were all boxers and had won at least one championship. He signed up and when to meet the coach. The coach was wearing a hood and a cap and Jack couldn’t really see his face. Jack introduced himself and then asked the coach’s name. The coach smiled and answered, “Christopher Smith”.
