Naheed’s Tragic Turn

The brick. It was horrible. Parents keeping their kid’s closer to them. Hearing all the whispers coming from the people around you. When the brick came flying through our living room window that was the next level the whispers, the protective parents that was okay. The brick brought my father’s anger to a whole new level.

I heard a loud crash and, screams. I ran as fast as I could. The smoke was rising around me, I was being enclosed by the smoke I couldn’t breathe. I was gasping for air then something grabbed me by the arm and ripped off my hijab. I heard laughs and then a gunshot. My heart was pounding I was scared and trembling. As I walked out of the smoke I saw my family, Papi, Mami and Nori crying. I ran to them and yelled their names. Their heads didn’t turn but they started to walk away and were murmuring. “Naheed. Naheed. Why her it should have been me.” The laughter, the brick, the anger built up inside of her. I started to cry I just couldn’t keep it in anymore. I started to choke I was coughing, I was drowning in my own madness and, nightmares.

I woke up screaming and crying. My parents came running in and so did Nori, and my Aunt and Uncle. I couldn’t understand was they were saying everything was blur. After they left I fell back asleep and had no dream at all.

5 years later

My phone rang. It was Aimee's mom. She sounded scared but I couldn’t exactly decipher what she was saying because she was sobbing. Naheed hurried to get dressed and tried to get a cab. I waved my hand like crazy, no car. About 15 minutes later a cab stopped. “St. Andrew’s Hospital please.” About 45 minutes I arrived at St. Andrew’s Hospital.

“Is there a girl named Aimee here?”

“Sorry mam we can’t give away information like that.” Said the lady at the front desk.

“She is my best friend and I got a call from her mother and I demand to see my best friend!” Demanded Naheed.

Around the corner came Aimee’s mom. “She is with me.” Said Aimee’s mother to the lady at the front desk. They walked around the corner and found Aimee’s room. I was scared to see my best friend Aimee in a hospital. We have known each other since 9/11/02.

I walked into the hospital room and saw Aimee’s left arm in a cast, her neck had a splint around it. I was petrified she was asleep, I think. Aimee looked weak, she had bags under her eyes.  She started to open her eyes.

“Naheed, why haven’t you called.” In a hoarse voice.

“Aimee, are you okay? Your face, it’s all scratched up? How bad do you hurt?”

“Naheed stop changing the subject why didn’t you call in the last 2 months?” Asked Aimee

“I thought you would be busy with your fashion career getting ready to go to Mulan.” I said sheepishly.

“I always have time you, Naheed.”

“Well I am glad you two have worked things out. Naheed, I think it is time go get going.” Said Aimee’s mother.

“I can’t believe my best friend is getting married to the love of her life!” I said.

“I can’t wait either, Todd is just so amazing. Just wait til he sees me.” Said Aimee.

Aimee was wearing a gorgeous fit and flare wedding dress. It was the traditional white with a open back. I was wearing a mini, simple bridesmaids dress it was light blue and it had sleeves. It also matched my hijab.

“2 minutes ladies let’s go!” Shouted Aimee’s mother.
