The Hunger

Time was when I could feed then wait another ten years, satiated, satisfied. I could return to my coffin, to that red satin lining, and sleep peacefully for a decade.

But time passed and the hunger grew. What had been ten years then became five. A ravenous hunger would wake me, too strong to be fought off, to be delayed. I would have to creep from my coffin and feed. Then whereas one victim would satisfy, it grew to be two. I would prowl and swoop my way through the night, carefully selecting my victims. There might have been hunts to find me, but they never ever came close to catching me.

Five became two and now my hunts are made yearly. Is it my age that makes my need for blood more potent? I have no idea of my true age but I must be hundreds of years old by now. How many bodies have I feasted on?

Every year now I must seek out someone. It matters not to me if they are male or female. So long as they have blood flowing through their veins they can satisfy my hunger. And fangs in place, I will indeed suck up each and every drop.

Sleep is something that I lack now. With just a year before my appetite becomes in need of quenching, I have less time to rejuvenate. I can see the greyness of my skin increasing, in spite of the extra blood. I had always believed that I was immortal but now I am not so sure.

Lock up your doors, secure your windows, and don’t set foot outside this night. For I will be hungry and hunting, and if my eye fixes upon you, you will become my prey. You will not even see me until I fatally strike.

Nothing will save you then, for your blood will become mine.
