When hearts lose, is the war won?

Wars to Win
The rains fall, the thunder strikes
Over the city, a shadow cast
Holding my cup of coffee, gazing out
My mind slowly travelling to the past
His mesmerising smile, the curve of his lips
To me, a work of art, no less
A memory which nows cuts me within
How really did it become such a mess?
The voice I could listen to all day long
Talking about things, big and small
Though its been years since it fell apart
Still haven't recovered from that fall
His touch, as gentle as ever
His hug, the safest heaven
The time I got to spend with him
The greatest blessing I'd been given
We had our share of fights
Wounds that wouldn't heal
And we let our differences win
No matter the love we did feel
Everyone said, move on
Leave the past in the past
Easier said than done, because
Memories like that don't fade as fast
Sometimes I wonder to myself
What would happen if I went back
Let my ego down for a while
Get back the colours that in life I lack
We didn't forgive, we held on
Until it ws too late
Small fights turned into wars
And disagreements to hate
My mind asks myself now
Is it too little, too late yet
To start afresh, a new beginning
The best gift my broken heart could get
Why did we ruin a beautiful thing
Against love why did we sin
Left morose and filled with guilt
The heart ached, but it had wars to win.
We lost ourselves for we had wars to win.
