THE RELUCTANT CRUISADER

They embark with excited anticipation,

For this floating incarceration.

With awe and wonder on eager faces,

Of a cruise to exotic far flung places.

Thousands of people, to be indulged,

This is the life, they can have it all.

With a fervent, captured clientele,

Profit, like waves, will rise and swell.

They venture ashore at the first port of call,

A whistle-top tour, then back on board.

For a lavish lunch, then time for a siesta

Before afternoon tea, of a scone and butter.

With second helpings of cakes and buns,

Before catching some rays in afternoon sun.

On sunbeds they lie, like sardines in a tin,

Crammed together, until the sun goes in.

Then time to prepare for a gala dinner,

In all its pretentious, pointless glamour.

Low cut ball-gowns, reveal ample flesh

Tuxedoes and dickie bows? More fancy dress!

Then after dinner, it’s a race to beat,

Everyone else, to bag the best seat.

In the theatre they listen to a tribute band,

Playing hits that once were in demand.

As the evening ends, it’s time for a treat

In the form of a lavish, midnight feast.

And in the morning, they all fill up again

With a hearty breakfast, in the sun.

They toy with discovering places ashore,

But the rows of sunbeds, have more allure.

There’s bingo, and line dancing for all to enjoy,

What more could they ask for, oh what a joy!

At the end of this floating incarceration,

They return home to face the realisation,

Of a credit card bill to make their eyes water,

And several rolls of additional blubber.

But at least they’ve acquired a deep sun tan,

Then resolve to do it all again.

Travel, they say, really broadens the mind,

A floating holiday camp? Think I’ll decline!
