“Difficult Day”

She was having

a very difficult

day

so many

of her days

seem to be

ending

with the tag

difficult

yet

she never lets

anything ever

bring her down,

she sits

in her car

escaping for

a little solitude

during her

lunch break

disappearing

into the sound

of the rain

beating down

on the roof

its not a

hard rain

but the drops

are big and

heavy

when they strike

the metal shell

of her car

making a

very unique

pitter splatter

sound,

her warm breath

causing the

windows

to fog up

creating an

artificial

tint

giving her a

strange feeling

of both security

and serenity

in her little

cocoon

she clicks on

the radio

low for

back round

music

as she scrolls

through her phone

sending a text

to her daughter

letting her know

she is thinking

about her

a sweet sentiment

with a subliminal

message of

I’m also watching

you,

she closes her

eyes

listening to

a soft song

in harmony

with the rain

her cell phone

starts to feel

heavy

in her hand

slowly pulling

her arm down

till her phone

is resting in

her lap

her mind

trying to

let loose

of some of

the pent-up

stress

attached to her

day

begins by pushing

the negative out

letting warmer

thoughts

start to filter in

filling up

the empty spaces

in her head

as they begin

taking hold

of her whole

body

the tag difficult

slowly drips off

the end of

her day

and after a

few more

minutes a drift

in thoughts of

secret beaches

lost loves

and miss spent

youth

she opens her

eyes

to see the water

cascading down

the front of

her windshield

feeling like she

is looking out

from behind a

waterfall,

she takes her

finger

and draws on the

condensation

of her window

a childlike picture

of an over-sized

sun

shinning down

on stick figures

of her and

her dog

she glances

at the clock

on her radio

she still has

a few more

minutes left

as an upbeat

song

with some power

behind it

comes through

the six by nine speakers

she twists

the volume to

maximum

totally enveloped

in the music

she goes electric

banging on the

steering wheel

to the raw

energy

of the beat

keeping it up

till the refrain

dies away,

and as she

clicks off

the radio

and pulls out

her car keys

the rain

begins to pour

down

with a vengeance

she finds this

funny

wearing just a

shirt

and a light

summer hoodie

she steps out

of her car

and raises her

face

to the sky

shouting

“Bring it on”

“Bitch”

as the rain

pelts her face

even harder

she just laughs

at the sky

then lowers

her head

flips the thin

cotton hood

over her head

and walks back

towards work,

difficult

can never stay

attached

to her

for very long

because you

just can’t

bring

this girl

down…
