I Know Who You Are

Do you think I don’t see you, lost in the shadows? I might not be able to make you out very well but I know you are there.

And I know who you are.

I’ll just carry on, sipping my coffee, occasionally letting my eyes drift your way. I hope you don’t notice me looking. Best to keep it that way for as long as I can.

I know who you are and why you are here.

Darkness in darkness, I make out your shape. That over-large hood and that long tatty cape. You pull it around you, fastened with rope and stand there unmoving as the minutes tick past. If I don’t come willingly you’ll use it, that rope, to bind me and tie me and tether all hope.

I know that there’s not long to go.

I look at the table and think of my life. All of the troubles and all of the strife; the things I would go back and change if I could. No time for that now, you are lifting you scythe.

I know who you are and I know it is time.

Your name – the Grim Reaper, or would you rather be Death. Your skeletal figure moves out from the shadow but you’ll receive no gasp of surprise from me. I’ve been watching and waiting for you to step forwards, to claim me, to chain me, to steal my last breath.

You are inhaling, we both know the rest.

We’ll go down to the river, where you’ve tied up your boat, and along the Styx River we’ll just go and float.
