A A A

It’s the last day of school and she’s on the roof. She brings the cup to her dainty, chapped lips, sweet with sugared poison. Lies, all of them. She looks at you, passes you the disposable paper cup. You give it back and she shrugs.

“Your loss.” She downs the rest of the cup and peers over the edge. No one passes by except for the occasional dog-walker.

Her steps are too sure as she nears the edge and peers over it. She turns back and waves you over.

“Gonna jump?” She asks you every time.

“No.” You refuse every time.

Just like every other time, you watch her march up to the edge. Just like every other time, you watch her jump. Just like every other time, you watch her fall.

And just like every other time, you blink and wake up for another week of school.
