Listen And Learn.

Your first day out and we must get to work. The snow -- you’ll need to learn it. So much whiteness but it can be treacherous, covering up deep crevasses that could swallow you up. It is so easy to fall and get injured, to die from the cold and from hunger. You need to look, you need to learn.

The ice is not so stable now. Stray near to the edges which you must do to fish, and you must be aware that the ice might break, crack apart. You might find yourself on a piece of ice that is drifting away out to sea. If that happens, react swiftly and jump before you have too far to swim.

You had an uncle that drifted away on such a small berg. By the time he realised that the ice had split from the main ice mass, the distance was too far for him to make his way back. I often wonder if he ever made it on to a further piece of ice or if.......No, you don’t need to hear that!

Food is becoming exceedingly scarce. You will have to rely on fish for the most part. There is talk that more of them might be around now the waters are not quite so cold, but so far I’ve not noticed it. Fishing can be time-consuming. Don’t wait until you are starving or you might not catch one in time. And one fish does little to quench hunger as you both well know!

There is less space now for us to make our homes. The lack of food and the lack of space can cause fights to break out. If you come across two of our kind confronting each other, rearing up and baring teeth, try to keep out of their sight. An enraged polar bear is a formidable opponent even for one of his own kind.

Talking of formidable opponents.....beware of humans. There are more and more of them encroaching on our lands, with their vehicles that let them speed around, and their equipment and, worst of all, their guns. Stay away from them, no matter how they try to entice you near. At best they will capture you and take you away. They are the biggest single hazard that you are likely to face.

All too soon the time for you to move on and make your own homes will come. But for now you need to learn your lessons well. But you can still have some fun while you are doing it!
