January One.

One second past midnight brought in the New Year

and just ninety-five minutes after, there came the fear;

this time it was in Turkey, an Istanbul club,

that found itself targeted by an armed thug

who shot his way in then fired into the crowds

that were just celebrating with music so loud.

The panic ripped through there, some dived into the river

to escape from the terror, and to safety deliver.

So many revellers ended up injured, so much blood there was shed,

the full extent of this outrage is yet unknown but at least thirty nine people are dead.

Another terrorist is now out on the loose, so much death on his hands;

are we already into another year where illogical thought rules the lands?

Is this just a sign of what to expect, another year fearing attack?

One thing’s for sure, that in this world security’s something we lack.

We’re heading on into a heap of ‘unknowns’, so many outcomes uncertain

and already I hear that North Korea is intent on closing the curtain.

They are threatening war of a nuclear kind, with weapons they say are long range;

together with Brexit, with President Trump, it looks like the world is deranged.

So out with the old and in with the new, chaos is already spreading,

lets hope it is not a portent of sorts to the year into which we are heading.
