The day it happened was a normal day.  Boring, even.  I had woken up late, eaten breakfast in bed, and watched TV.  My roommate was out of town, so I had no plans, no obligations.  There was no one to check in with, no one to worry about me.  Not that there should have been anything to worry about.  I lived in a small suburb of a safe city, where the worst thing that happened was a strike against public transportation.  So walking home from the grocery store just as I did several times a week should have been no big deal.  And at first, it wasn’t.  It was a beautiful day, my grocery bags were full of my favorite foods, and I was looking forward to the How I Met Your Mother marathon I was planning to have when I got home.  I was so close, too.  Five more minutes and I would have been able to see the front entrance to my apartment building.  Five more minutes and I would have been off the secluded, shady street that at the time had seemed like nothing more than a welcome escape from the hot sun.  Five more minutes, and my life wouldn't have completely changed forever.  Whether that would have been a good or bad thing, I still don’t know.
