Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time Hell made its home on Earth. Demons came up from the cracks in the earth, swallowing everything in their wake and burning the rest. The world was going up in flames, and I had a front row view to it all. From my bedroom window I can see dark figures flying in the sky and smoke billowing from skyscrapers in the city. I sit here and watch as the world turns to ash, wishing I could join it, but here I am, stuck in my so called castle. I get up from my seat at the window and turn to retrieve my handmade escape, just a bunch of blankets tied together. There’s a horrible scream coming from somewhere in the house, most likely the bottom floor based on the volume, which means I have time to get away but it’s limited. I throw the makeshift ladder out my window when I hear the door handle to my prison wiggle. Panic shoots through my veins; do I open it? Do I not? Being the naïve sheltered girl that I am, I choose to go to the door. Opening it a sliver, I check to see who’s on the other side, thinking maybe it’s my father coming to take us somewhere away from this burning mess, but I look up to see a beautiful face with burning blue eyes and a dangerous smile. The door bursts open, knocking me back on my bottom, “Hello little human, welcome to your Hell,” the demon says with a grin. Little does he know I grew up in Hell, this was a relief to me, “Have you come to save me,” I say in all seriousnesson. He cocks his head, looking like he’s trying to comprehend what I just said, like he was dumbfounded, “are you not afraid to die?” I laugh and anger flashes across his beautiful freatures, so I sober myself “oh you were being serious, the answers no I’m not afraid to die; you see, I haven't left this house once in my entire life, so inside I am already dead.” Now he laughs, the sound coming from deep in his chest, “a change of scenery then,”he says and I feel my body go up in flames. The burn is excruciating, melting my bones from the inside out, then there’s a loud whooshing sound and everything goes dark.
