“Still Got It”

She pretended

not to notice

but her daughter

wouldn’t let it

slide

she had seen

the two high school

boys

checking her out,

her high school

daughter

who is very

cute

in her own right

not amused

it was obvious

who the eyes

of the boys

were following,

she was

way past

the Hot mom

mark

on attitude

alone

but the rest

wasn’t

all earned

with her body

she carried

an air of

confidence

in her presents

that exaggerated

all her pieces,

her daughter

shakes her head

and rolls her

eyes

to show her

displeasure

with that

thirty seconds

of unsolicited

attention

her mom just

received

she looks at her

daughter

and smiles

not sure if

she is annoyed

embarrassed

or just plain

jealous,

they stop and

look

at a window

display

she looks at

her reflection

as her daughter

looks at the clothes

in the window

she turns sideways

and checks out

her profile

in the glass,

for being on

the other side

of forty

she was quite

proud

of what she

sees

reflecting back

to her

she was blessed

with a slim

athletic form

and she learned

from an early

age

how to make

it

work for her

with the right

combination

of sexy

with style

but today

she was rocking

the causal mom

look

high top sneakers

faded skinny jeans

and a very snug

black “Misfits”

concert shirt

she had played

one of their

early records

for her daughter

once

but the heavy

fast beat

just blew past

her

probably for the

best

two Misfit girls

in one house

might be pushing

it,

her daughter

catches her

looking

at her reflection

then notices

the two boys

are still watching

them

with hungry

eyes

her daughter grabs

her

by the hand

and pulls her

around the corner

to the next group

of clothing stores

leaving the boys

with just a mental

picture

and something

to talk about

as they kill

a slow moving

day

she looks at

her daughter

trying to remember

a time

she had that

much innocence

in her

as her daughter

does now

but can’t,

she grew up

fast

for better or

worst

her teen years

were on fast

forward

through the streets

of San Jose

and she never

touched pause

till she was

pregnant

and by then

she had already

wound-up

more of a

life

than most other

women

could ever hope

to know,

she gives her

daughter

a little nudge

to lead her

towards the

escalators

and as they

head down

to the 1st

floor

a group of

Gothic kids

checking them out

notices her

“Misfits” tee-shirt

and two young

girls scream

“MISFITS RULE!”

from the 3rd

level

down to them

she looks up

at the kids

and hollers back

“Ride Johnny, Ride”

the Gothic kids

explode

with comments

quotes

and laughter,

her daughter

drags her

the rest of the

way

down the

escalator

she looks at

her daughter

who again

is shaking her

head

and rolling her

eyes

but she can’t

hide

her mischievous

smile,

she may not

have ever been

that innocent

once,

but her daughter

has a long

way

to go

if she

ever

wants to

be

this Cool…
