While I may not have grown up in the heart of the lofty aristocratic society, my mother did not raise an insufferable fool. I knew which gloves to wear at a garden party, and which to wear to dinner. I knew how to gracefully drape a riding habit over the saddle when riding side saddle. I knew how to apply perfume so that it would linger in the air as I walked by. I knew how to be a gracious host that was full of life and charm. I also knew how to get exactly what I wanted, and that was to have all of those things for myself. I wanted to be a lady! Mother was a servant of all things. She was as close to being a scullery maid as anyone could possibly be. However, the woman had a keen eye, and thus, she took notice. She would mentally decipher and note of the way the society ladies acted, dressed, talked, and walked. Being the young and only child of hers, I soaked it all up like a sponge. I absorbed the knowledge so that it may sink into every pore of my body and radiate through me. I knew I deserved more. I deserved to be a lady and to reach the peak of society. I, Constance Lee Hatchaway, was going to reach the top of the golden summit. Even if it was the last thing I ever did.
