Do you see me with your eyes closed?

Do you know me by my heart?

Are you hearing all the words I say, or listening to the ones I don’t?

There is a difference in knowing me, and knowing only what you see; on the surface, in your mind, an image you’ve tweaked and reassigned

Skin thick and smooth, has never been bruised; has never been scarred, torn back and abused

Face full of smiles, laugh lines for miles; not a tear ever shed down those cheeks, all the while

Whatever is sweet, whatever is meek; whatever’s not bitter with anger to leak

That’s all you will notice, and all you will see

That’s all you long for—that’s nothing like me

You see colorful dreams, unrealistic, strange things; when you close your eyes, the truth is disguised

My heart you will dress to suit your fine taste; you care not to see any pain on my face

You cling to the cover, but can’t read the book; I’d discard my mask…if you’d care to look

You don’t know me at all, and you never will see

The person you love—is nothing like me
