Chapter 2: Field of Death

The group wandered the ruins of the former great city. The vast amounts of rubble, both scorched and untouched, was a grim sight that was supplemented by the burned and blood-drenched stone as well as the flattened and gory corpses. The once beautiful sights and smells of the city were replaced with utter destruction and a foul mixture of smoke and burnt flesh. Even the steel structures of several landmarks had been liquefied to layered and solidified pools of darkened metal.

Shirou, with a little groan of effort, moved a broken section of a wall out of the group's way so they continue on their tour of this field of death. Alucard and Lycana were speechless, as they had never seen anything quite like this in their long lives, but kept silent, as if they were giving the dead their moment of silence. Rose looked on with a face devoid of emotions, even as her tears streamed down her cheeks, leaving them red. Never had she seen this kind of destruction either, but she never expected her home to be the place the destruction would find.

The four walked through what could only be described as hell that seeped up from it's dark depths and bubbled up into this forsaken city. They saw Hell on every street corner, they saw Hell in the fields, they saw Hell in the city square, with the only building left spared being the Royal Palace. Even the flowers managed to avoid being touched the flames. The four approached the palace in confusion, even Rose donned a confused expression when she saw the palace was still completely untouched.

They entered and looked at the sight inside; countless dead bodies littering the floor, a few dozen palace guards and an almost equal amount foreign warriors making up the body count. Shirou went ahead to one of the outsider's corpses and looked on the armor for any insignias or symbols, finding only one, in the center of the chestplate, as well as the helm, covering the forehead. It was a 5-pointed star inside a circle, a pentagram, with two little curved designs at the top resembling horns. Shirou heard footsteps walk behind him as he looked behind him, the source being Alucard as he approached, having a grim expression on his face. “The armed forces of Hell. It appears that, judging by the mass destruction outside, that the whole of their military, led by General of Hell's Forces, Beelzebub, was here after we left.” Shirou looked at him with confusion, “Beelzebub? And what do you mean by Hell's Forces?” Alucard sighed in exasperation, moments before remembering his lack of knowledge was due to his memory loss, and said, “Beelzebub Neros is related to the first Archdemon to hold the title of the King of Hell, Lucifer Neros I. From what my father told me, the last King of Hell employed his brother as the Commander of his army, and he swept through the world in search of the way to Asgard, so he could kill Odin and take his weapon, The Spear of Warfare, Gungnir. The two fought hard and were equally matched, but at the end of it all, he defeated Odin. With that, he used the spear to cause the Fall of Gods that was prophesied before your mother's time, Ragnarok, Singlehandedly.” Shirou looked at him with shock, “H-he killed an entire group of gods by himself?! But, that’s...”

“Yes, it is a frightening thing to know, but as long as you don't give him a reason to kill you he will not try to find you.” Alucard said with surprising calmness, but deep inside there was a single feeling he felt. One simple feeling shared by just about anything that draws breath; Fear. Pure, unadulterated fear. Such a great warrior and his army alone destroyed the entirety of the Skogurian Army, as well as its people and quite possibly their King. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he may still be here, looking for survivors.

“Well, we can't just stand here and feel sorry for every soldier that died here.”, Lycana said as she approached, speaking with a serious tone, “We can only avenge their wrongful death by killing the ones who caused this..” Alucard turned to her with a look of shock and slight outrage, reflected by his words, “Are.. Are you insane?! He is the most feared warrior of the mortal world, as well as Hell! Not even Lucifer himself would even think to challenge him, and you're suggesting we go out and kill him?!” Rose, quietly, said, “I agree with Alucard… I-I’d like to kill him too but.. it seems to me we would be outmatched… We would die before we could get the chance to harm him.. I'm not even sure Shirou's Darkening magic would be enough of a match for him if he and his army can destroy entire cities this fast.. I'm sorry, Lycana” Lycana sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder, causing Rose to jump slightly from the sudden contact, “I know.. I know we can't kill him yet. But we have to find some way to prevent this from happening again, and it appears the only to do so is to kill him-” Lycana stopped herself when a loud thud rang out from a corridor to their right, almost like a footstep.. and then another, confirming her suspicion.

Someone else was in the castle.
