Chapter 4: The Pain of Loss

Rose's broken, pain-filled cries echoed in the room as a figure moved in the distant shadows on the other side of the wide room, above the group in the wall. Alciel groaned as he forcibly removed most of himself from the wall, examining the room in an annoyed manner, fixing his hair and looking over at the crying Rose holding her dead father. “Kids nowadays.  They don't know how to follow instructions.” he said as he dropped from the wall and lands gracefully, advancing toward Rose. Shirou moved to stand in his way, both of the Silver Keys drawn as he stared at the white-haired Demon as he stood between him and Rose. “You will not lay a finger on her... Stand back, or else.”, Shirou snapped at the male, his tone supplemented by a slightly angered growl.

Alciel laughed as he said, “Heh! That ferocity, it’s just like old times. Unlike right now, we used wooden swords though… Speaking of way back then, how is Ataraxia doing?” Shirou’s angry glare was slightly softened by confusion as he took a step closer to him, “Why the hell would you care?”  Alciel chuckled and said, “Because…  You two aren’t the only ones who can use Shadow Manipulation.” With that, he smirked and curled his right hand into his fist as he looked at Shirou and spoke two familiar words. Two words that Shirou never thought he would hear another person say, Pugnoumbra!”, As he finished speaking the incantation, the oh-so familiar collection of black flame grew on his fist as he threw the punch, directed right at the very confused demigod’s head. Shirou quickly jumped back to avoid it, landing a small distance away as he said, “What... the hell?!”

Alciel’s fist began to spark with energy as he began to summon another Pugno Umbra, until a voice called out to him from above, “Alciel. We have done enough for now, you can get them later. Withdraw at once.” He looked up at his father and sighed begrudgingly as he said, “Yes, Father.” before leaving Shirou with a little too graceful of a bow, before dropping down into his own rippling shadow.

Shirou’s attention turned to Rose as he went to her. He grimaced as she cried, putting a sword back into its sheath and reached out to put his hand gently on her head. He had saw her pain, heard her pain and even felt her pain. She blinked as she slowly looked up at him, tears streaming in freefall down her cheeks. He sheathed his second sword and kneeled down to her level, reaching out and pulling her into a hug, which she quickly returned with a rather tight grip. “I'm so sorry..” Shirou whispered to her, but she didn't reply, she only cried quietly on his shoulder, her hands gripping onto his back. Once her cries stopped, he let her go and stood up, and she rose with him, her fingers gripping onto his jacket sleeve.

He started to walk toward her father’s body, but he was stopped by Rose’s unwavering grip on his arm, “Shirou..” she said softly, as she wiped her eyes free of tears, and looked up at him, her blue eyes greatly reddened from crying. “Yes?” He looked down at her and gave her a half-hearted smile, as he also felt the pain from her loss. He wished he hadn't died. He wished he could still be here so he could hear all the stories of his grandfather, he wished he hadn't suddenly left and hurt his daughter, but that was unavoidable…

He had to protect his daughter...

“Don't leave me here...” she said as she put her head against his chest and gripped the red shirt he wore, “Please...” He nodded slowly at her request and put an arm around her, holding her close as he said, “Don’t worry, I won't.”

They stayed like that for a few moments before she looked up at him and slowly let go, Shirou doing the same. “Thank you... Shirou”, she said. He nodded and went down to lift her father, grunting with effort at his heavy body. “Ah-” Alucard ran to help the stumbling Shirou and held Oberon with Shirou, the both facing opposite sides with Lycana following behind them with Rose at her side.

The four left the castle, with Oberon in tow, and make their way to a plot of land that somehow had been left untouched by the flames. Shirou and Alucard gently set down the fallen King in the grass. Shirou went off and looked for something to use to dig a hole for him, before remembering his skill with Creation Magic. He extends his hand and summoned a pair of shovels, walking back to the group and handing Alucard one. After many minutes of measurements and digging, they dug a hole able to fit the gentle giant. They lowered him inside the hole, and offered him a moment of silence before Alucard sent him off. “This man was a man of righteousness. His life was long. It was filled with more experience than anyone of us can express, but it was also filled with joy. Today this man's body dies, but his spirit lives on in us all. In his family.. in the people who stood by him during his last moments. He does not leave behind a daughter here today. He has and will never leave her side, even though his life has ended.”

As Alucard spoke, rain began to fall onto the four, even as the clouds would part for the first time since the destruction of the city. Rose looked up and blinked suddenly as a droplet fell onto her cheek. Lycana did nothing but look down at Oberon with sadness. Rose looked to her side at Shirou and saw what appeared to be rain water on his cheeks, until a single droplet slid down his cheek from his eyes. He had been silently crying within the rain. She snaked out of Lycana’s arm and went to him and hugged him, which he did not return for a moment, pulling her close suddenly. “I'm sorry.. I couldn't do anything…” Rose looked at him and leaned up and left a small kiss on his cheek, which caused him to blink and look down at her as she said, “This isn't your fault. None of this is, so stop beating yourself up over it.”, she let go of him and continued, “Thank you for all you've done for me. You've saved me three times now, so that was to thank you.” Shirou nodded and smiled, “You're welcome, Rose.”

After Alucard finished speaking, everyone said their final goodbyes. Shirou and Alucard then began to slowly bury the King under the dirt, as Shirou finds a single splintered piece of wood and stabbing it onto the top. They all took a break from this hellish day, sitting down to rest. They sat and let the rain fall on them as they processed what had happened, before Lycana broke their silence.

“Well..”, Lycana said, “What should we do next?” After she asked, the three looked at Shirou, who said, “We go north. We have to warn the rest of Alfheim that the demons have destroyed Skögur. If we can prevent this from happening again, I'm sure Oberon will be pleased.” The four nodded and stood up, as the rain poured down mercilessly, and set off for the next city of Alfheim to the north, The frozen city of Erfrierung.
