A salute to the flag; marching in unison to the cadence call while shrapnel falls violently around you, guns fire like lightening, cannons crashing like thunder. The ground shakes violently beneath your feet as you run for cover. Lying in a trench, hot and sweaty, you take a moment to breathe when you hear the whimpers of a wounded brother only a few yards away. Crawling to help, holding him until he takes his last breath. All you wish is to go home, tired and broken, but you won’t go home yet, not just yet. You fight for her, you’d die for her, and you still stay until the battle is through. Stinging and burning in your stomach now, you are finished. Your part in this battle is completed. Your tags covered in mud and blood, your last token to your loved ones. You gave your everything, because after all, freedom is not free.
