I knew what I was looking for; I just hoped and prayed that I hadn’t wasted my time. Usually they had my favourite cakes, a Belgian bun, some lemon meringue pie and a vanilla slice, but what if they had run out, what was I to do then. I prayed for good luck and I crossed my fingers, hoping to find what I was looking for, but my thoughts were telling me I would be unlucky. It was hard to think positive when I was feeling this depressed. All I wanted to do was to buy the cakes, run back home, stick on the kettle and make myself a lovely cup of fresh hot tea, cuddle up to my cat and give up. There were loads of people waiting by the bakery counter, so many that I swore under my breath. I guess there were about 20 people in the queue and I had no patience, mostly because I was in a terribly bad mood and I was quite hungry, having not eaten anything since getting out of bed at 10am this morning and it was now 2 in the afternoon.

The lady in front of me was carrying a bag on her shoulder, rummaging around there, seemingly unable to find what she was looking for and she kept muttering to herself, “they were here, where have they gone ‘’ it was like her words were on repeat, she said it once then two times, and again three, all the whilst sounding really annoyed.  I couldn’t ignore her annoyance, so I tapped on her shoulder and I asked her “is there anything I can help you with, it’s just that you seem quite upset and confused ‘’ Her eyes directed themselves towards me ‘’ well to be honest with you, I very much doubt it. I’ve lost my pair of earrings, they were given to me by a good friend of mine a long time ago and I always carry them in my bag, I like to keep them with me but now they have disappeared. ‘’ “Strange how you seem to have lost a pair of earrings, because I recently just found some ‘’ so I responded with the truth. ‘’ They were on the floor just by the doorway and they reminded me of a pair my friend gave to me, when I was just a little kid of 9 years old.  I’m glad i found them because they are clearly yours, but can I just ask you, by way of curiosity, what was your friends name, your friend?”  She smiled, “Lilly was her name, Lily Black ‘’ ‘’ I knew just the same girl, what a strange coincidence this is’’ I looked across to her and smiled for the first time since my break up.

During our little interchange the queue had become incredibly shorter, and very quickly too.  Maybe more time had passed then we had both realised.  Regardless, we both paid for our cakes and then stood aside.‘’What cakes did you buy?”  we both ask in unison and our response are the same, lemon meringue pie, vanilla slice and a Belgian bun.  ‘’ They are the best, right” I smile at her, ‘’ I’m so sorry, I nearly forgot my manners, I never introduced myself nor asked your name. Let me tell you, I am Hannah Lake, do you mind me asking, what is your name?  It seems only polite to introduce myself, considering we’re both acquainted with Lily Black “I stood next to her in my orange t-shirt and my black leggings, purple trainers unlaced, not realising they had come undone, with my black medium length hair sitting over the side of my left shoulder and I was waiting for her to respond.

She seemed somewhat distracted, like her mind was in another place and her eye’s looked glazed over, and confused.  It was very easy for me to pick up on how others were feeling, in fact I was a known empath, and I was very in tune with other people’s feelings.  There was something wrong, I could tell but my instinct told me not to ask her and, so I left it and just waited for her to speak.  Her build was completely different to mine, whereas I was slim, slender and tall, she seemed somewhat plump; she had a big chest where by comparison I had a minimal one, and she looked like she might have been pregnant, her stomach sticking outwards as if there was certainly something within, but I didn’t ask, I wasn’t that direct with strangers.  ‘’Please forgive me ‘’ she finally spoke, ‘’ I am Samantha Gold, please forgive my silence earlier, sometimes I drift away for a moment or two, and I guess I need a nudge to bring my mind back to the present, I have a lot on my mind. “‘’ There is a seat, just there, shall we take it, order a drink and eat one of our cakes?  “so, I asked her with enthusiasm, “well, I’d love to, let’s do just that “Samantha smiled a shy smile as the words left her tongue, and we both proceeded to sit down, ordering a fresh and strong cup of coffee.  We each took out the Belgian bun and awaited our cup of coffee.

Sitting in silence I observed her outfit and her hair, both were very lovely, almost upper class and quite posh, or so I thought.  It looked like some sort of high expensive top, made of maybe silk, the type of top you may well find in a shop like Harrods. I’m being serious, this looked like some expensive top, but how was I to know.  It certainly reminded me of an expensive top I once saw in a magazine. My fingers found themselves on the surface of the table and I found myself tapping, I started staring down at my hands as my self-consciousness took a hold of me, I felt shy and I found myself unable to speak words.  She wasn’t speaking, neither was I and I found this slightly uncomfortable, I even started feeling inferior to her, she was the adult and I was the child. It was something very common with me, it always seemed to happen, whenever I was around another adult I reverted to a child, I couldn’t help it.  It didn’t mean I liked it.

So, I just waited and waited for her to speak, the coffee arrived, and the waiter smiled.  Suddenly, my heart melted, I found myself in love with his smile, I found myself crushing on someone I didn’t even know, and I felt like a shy little girl who adored a stranger’s smile.  I felt like I was blushing a deep crimson red. It was always the way with me, any nice-looking guy and my heart would skip a beat, or maybe two. It was silly really, I had just been dumped by my boyfriend the night before yet now I was crushing on a waiter in a supermarket.  I felt the urge to say something to him, but I said nothing. It was Samantha who spoke up ‘’ I’ve seen you in here before, I think Hannah here is taking an infatuation with you, you see how she is blushing, a deep crimson red, you two could be like a match made in heaven ‘’ Internally I was going mad, why was she saying this to him, did she have no manners. I blushed even further, forgot about the unfinished Belgian bun and the nice hot cup of coffee, and angrily stormed out.  I was fuming and utterly embarrassed. All I wanted to do was to sit down with her and speak about my friend but her rude manners flipped me over the edge, I was glad to now be out of there. She was a rude snob, and I hated how she purposefully embarrassed me like that. You think someone is nice, the reality is you just can’t make assumptions.
