Drums Of War

It’s just another day, one like thousands and thousands of others. We are all getting on with our normal, everyday lives. We get up and go to school, to college, to work, or just follow our usual daily rituals.

There is no hint that today will be different.

And then it starts!

Not a noise, for at first the distance is too great, but a reverberation, a shuddering that seems to rise from the ground and up in to the very air. It’s a steady thump, thump, thump.

No one knows what to make of it, or quite what to do. The juddering intensifies but it is not an earthquake. There is not a rumble and shudder that increases in severity, that is constantly building. It is more like a marching sound, a drumbeat, getting louder, getting nearer. Becoming ever stronger.

Thud, thud, thud. The glass in windows begins to rattle as the buildings start to shake. Stay out in the open or seek shelter. What should we do? Even the children are afraid now.

And then they appear, those skeletal drummers, marching to the beat. Hundreds of them followed by an army, for these are the drums of war.
