He showered her with little “I love you” notes as if he were a highschooler in love, he moved around like a man possessed by a determination that drove him like a car riding on empty and, yet the driver kept him chugging along without rest.

“I’ll be there tonight” he had told her early that morning, it was noon time now and although he had never given her an exact ETA she could always assume tonight meant the moment he got off from his second job or an hour later. That was usually around 12 AM or 2. She was eager, the sight of the melancholy orange glow of the sky as the fall of the sun began to gradually steal the light away from the world and eventually replace it with the subtle gleam of the moon filled her heart with unrest. She could relate the anticipation of the coming night with that of her own anticipation for his arrival.

“Roderick” she would often smile at the sound of his name, such an uncommon tone to roll off the tongue. There were not many Roderick’s in this world, both proverbially and realistically, he was a one of a kind man. He was handsome, standing about 6’3 built of full muscle and a head of brown silken hair that he kept tied in a pony-tail, his eyes bright blue and breathe-taking. Her heart fluttered at the simple thought of him holding her in his powerful embrace. She just wished he would hurry so that her fantasy could quickly become a reality.

Nearly 5 hours went by and Roderick could not make any contact with her, he had sent the text during his second break 1 hour before his anticipated clock out time. Of course, he had not factored in his boss being the asshole that he always seems to be. He worked in a small office for some make-shift Law-firm that opened 3 years ago in his neighborhood. The boss was running this place into the ground before Roderick showed up and now they treat him like a slave, of course the upside is he gets paid more than anyone else and he basically runs the show. Now all Edgar; his piece of crap boss can do is bark orders and do the basic attorney things. Roderick is simply the manager, keeping the business running alongside the Financial coordinator. The boring stuff.

“Roddy, I need you to stay a few hours after to look through the Diego mess” Edgar’s pompous tone jamming a blade in his chest at his words. Edgar had known of his plans, that it was her birthday, that “Roddy” would need to leave on time to get there so he could be with her.

“I can’t it’s Elisa’s birthday” Roderick couldn’t stay, he refused to do what Edgar had asked.

“Better work fast then man” Edgar said with a wide grin before walking out of the office. Roderick simply sat there, hours passing as his co-workers left one by one on time and kept sitting there, in the silence of the empty office, the shuffling of papers, the clatter of a keyboard as he rushed through the files.

She had waited 2 hours passed the time where she would usually expect him, she sat there, in her apartment watching as the moons useless silver gleam allowed the world to be engulfed in the darkness and she could feel herself begin to cry. Had he gotten tired of her? Did he decide not to come? Where the hell was he? She looked to her apartment, an empty shell, a reminder of all of her life’s failures, she lived within the body of her own follies and she wept as the walls felt as if they were closing in on her. She had moved out from her family home 3 years ago and her family had not talked to her since, her father hated Roderick and her mother followed suit. He wasn’t a bad man by any means but…..his ambition pulled her along like a chain around her heart and she could not resist the draw. She had no plans on going to school and no desire to leave the job that she was currently at but her parents, it seemed as if they simply wanted to keep an eye on her, but sadly she cared more about Roderick than her families wants for her life, and now here she was. Alone, in this apartment all the memories of her choices, her mistakes, her regrets falling down upon her. What if she had gone to school? What if she wanted more from her life? What if she had never met Roderick? Where was Roderick?

She was dependent on him, she knew that more than anything. Emotionally and monetarily, the apartment was his, her life was his. She had no one because no one wanted to talk to her. Her family disowned her, her friends……she never had any. She needed him there, and he knew that. Maybe she was too clingy. She texted him:

Roderick where are you? and he did not answer for an hour.

Roderick? And no answer for another hour

Roderick are you going to be late? And no answer.

He could hear his phone vibrating, but he was focused, he wanted to finish the work load so he could get to her. He knew a simple reply, a simply explanation as to what the situation was could probably ease the onslaught of messages that without a doubt Elisa was sending him but he just….didn’t want to look at his phone. He was pissed, incredibly pissed and he did not want to take it out on Elisa, especially on her birthday……..but since it was her birthday he couldn’t leave her without a reply either. He grabbed his phone and answered:

Edgar made me stay late….I’m really sorry. I’ll be there late. 3 hours passed and no answer

Elisa was home she had saw his text and now she sat there. The lights had gone out in the apartment as a coming storm caused a rumble of thunder to sound, following a flash of lightning and the thousands of heavy patters of rain. She lay there on the floor, looking up to the ceiling as she thought back to the words of her mother.

“He’ll never love you” she had said, “He can’t….youre such a stupid girl”

“He’s useless, aint no lawyer gunna want some white trash like you. He doesn’t want to take care of you” her father had told her. They weighed on her, pressing on her chest as her eyes forced the despair from her heart. Her tears soaked the carpet as she lay there alone……”Happy birthday” she whimpered to herself. “Happy birthday” she sobbed.

For her 13th birthday her father had been drinking, she could not remember what it was but it caused him to become angry. He was filled with a white rage that caused him to choke her, she hadn’t done anything from what she could remember but he just choked her until she passed out and the next morning she woke up in the same spot. She had to hide the bruise for a month.

For her 16th birthday, her mother overdosed on cocaine and had to go to the hospital, her father in raged at the bills beat her that night before storming out the house. She went out and wandered the streets just to let the sorrow spill out of her as she looked to the moon for a comfort that it could not provide, so she sold herself to some old guy in a suit that thought she was prostitute…..he didn’t mind the bruises.

Then when she was 17 she met Roderick and on her 18th birthday he promised she would never have a birthday filled with grief again….if she moved away with him when they turned 24 and she believed him. She still believed him, she will always believe him. Because he has never lied to her before so why would he start now.

Roderick rushed from the office, tossing the Diego files on Edgars desk with a note that read: Fuck Off along with a letter of resignation as he dashed to his car and sped off to be with his love. Amidst the lightning and thunder, the falling torrents of rain and floods within the streets he sped, in the 80’s in the 100’s he rushed to get home, thirty minutes away, 20 minutes away, 10 minutes away he sped through the streets until he could see the apartment in the distance a brief illumination giving a vison to the complex as lightening ignited the sky in a bright white radiance. He was almost there he would be there soon.

Roderick dug his phone from his pocket looking down as he began to send a message to his beloved, and then he heard the cry. A blood curdling shriek of horror as he wiped his car into the apartment complex entrance. A woman screamed out: “DAD!!!!!!!”. Roderick looked up in time to see the crash of a body, bending awkwardly onto his windshield, the glass changing from a clear plate glass with beads of water falling from the surface to a mass of glass drenched red washing down from hundreds of cracks webbing across a once pristine surface. His car thuds as he feels it speed over the sad husk of a once living man, and elderly man; Mr. Hotchkins. He had run out into the rain in a Schizophrenic fit when the thunder and lightning lit up the sky. His daughter had gone after him but couldn’t find him….until Roderick’s car mowed him down, the elderly man’s arms lodging into axle, his brittle bones snapping and contorting enough for his thin arm to fit. His body dragged across the parking lot as Roderick attempted to skid to a holt. Mr. Hotchkins screams of agony resonating only for a few moments before the pain becomes unbearable, his frail body finally breaking and his life giving way, offering death as a release to the predicament that had plagued him briefly. Roderick sat in his car for just a few seconds looking to the woman who had fallen to her knees, crying out as neighbors and passersby all crowded around to look at the scene.

Roderick just sat there as police and first responders pushed their ways through the crowd of bodies. As his mind snapped to reality at the sound of a cop rapping at his window he looked first to the man and then into the crowd. He could see his love there, Elisa looking to him with wide-eyes, tears or what could possibly be rain falling down her cheeks. He looked to his phone, to the message that he was about to send: “Happy Birthday Elisa” it read. And he closed his eyes as he began to cry.
