The Scene

FADE IN:

INT. DHARMSALA – HOTEL ROOM – DAY

Ananya (22) enters the room and looks at her father, Prakash (62), who is gazing at the beautiful mountains through the window, Ananya smiles.

ANANYA

I know you love them.

Prakash turns to her.

PRAKASH

(smiles peacefully)

I always get calmed by them. Coming here is a

delight.

ANANYA

I was planning it for long, before the semester as well.

PRAKASH

Oh! But yes, we needed this.

Prakash gets into a thought, his smile fades away.

PRAKASH

Past months were tough.

Hearing this, Ananya comes close to him.

ANANYA

(concernedly consoling)

I know you miss her, but we have to move on,

right?

PRAKASH

(giving a short sarcastic laugh)

Did she give another option?

Ananya lowers her eyes and gets silent, understands her father’s pain.

PRAKASH

I told a million times, don’t join police, but that

idiot lady didn’t listen.

ANANYA

(smiles hopefully)

But aren’t we proud of her, isn’t she an

inspiration?

He looks straight into her eyes, though gently.

PRAKASH

Not for me!

ANANYA

(slightly disappointed)

Don’t say that, papa. You clearly know it was her

duty.

PRAKASH

(sarcastically smiles)

Duty? Then what about the duty towards family?

Ananya stops arguing as she notices Ramesh (55) and Rukmani (53) – Ananya’s uncle and aunt, enter the room while speaking to each other.

Rukmani is wearing some heavy jewelry and Ramesh is a simple looking man with thick spectacles. They both look at the disturbed father and daughter.

RUKMANI

(perplexed)

What happened? Is everything okay?

Ananya turns towards them, managing to bring a fake smile, but Prakash is still occupied with thoughts, doesn’t consider the entrance of Ramesh and Rukmani.

ANANYA

All fine! We were talking about my mother.

RUKMANI

(displeasured)

Ohho...Leave the past, let us just enjoy this

beautiful place.

Hearing this, Ramesh gives a disgusted look to Rukmani and comes close to Prakash. He keeps his hand on Prakash’s shoulder.

RAMESH

(consoling gently)

I know it is not easy but...

RUKMANI

(interrupting)

It has been 7-8 months now, just forget what is

gone. Let us hurry up to explore the place.

Ananya looks at her with angered eyes but doesn’t speak out of respect. Ramesh comes close to Rukmani with quick steps.

RAMESH

(scolding)

Can’t you stay quiet?

RUKMANI

(defending)

What is wrong in it? He can’t lament whole life.

Before Ramesh could further scold her—

PRAKASH

(looks at Ramesh)

Probably, she is right. Why to think of the

woman who didn’t think of me?

ANANYA

(loosing patience)

Papa, this is not at all true. Maa loved you so

much.

PRAKASH

Really? I guess she loved her foolish police job

more.

Ananya gets angry on listening such words about her mother.

ANANYA

(irritated)

Papa! She doesn’t deserve these words,

at least from you.

Prakash turns his face to the mountains again, but this time is was to hide the emerging tears in his eyes.

Ramesh tries to calm Ananya, but Rukmani pulls him back so that the father-daughter drama may continue.

RUKMANI

(whispers into Ramesh’s ears)

Why are you interfering? Let it go on.

Ramesh shakes his head in disappointment.

ANANYA

(firmly)

There is something I need to tell you, Papa.

Prakash doesn’t turn.

PRAKASH

Another praise for your mother?

ANANYA

Yes, I have taken a decision.

Prakash turns, senses something big, gets curious. Ramesh and Rukmani stares at her, awaiting her words.

PRAKASH

Decision? What decision?

Ananya pauses, she takes a sigh and looks at Prakash with stern eyes.

ANANYA

I want to join the police. I have cleared the

first round.

Prakash gets stunned, eyes get big and wide, stares at Ananya.

RUKMANI

(showing displeasure)

Like mother, like daughter. Nothing can help

their arrogance.

Ramesh pinches Rukmani and gestures to stay quiet.

PRAKASH

(eyes with tears)

What did you just say?

ANANYA

I said whatever you just heard.

PRAKASH

(on the verge of crying)

Can’t you see my tears? Do you too want to be

the reason behind it, like your mother.

ANANYA

(smiles proudly)

I don’t have tears for her. I have pride.

PRAKASH

(shouts)

And this was the very pride which made her die.

ANANYA

No, papa. It was the sheer passion for her duty

which took her to fight the gangsters

singlehandedly.

PRAKASH

(irritated)

Her stubbornness took her away from us. You are

doing the same thing. Don’t you realize that?

ANANYA

All I see is that my mother is my inspiration. I

want to follow her footsteps and make her proud.

Prakash gets silent as he is still not able to accept and believe what has happened. He feels that Ananya is taking the path which will take her away from him, like his wife did.

Rukmani looks at Prakash.

RUKMANI

(displeased)

I told you to get her married right after the

college. Do it now otherwise she will

take this silly step.

Rukmani looks at Ananya unhappily. Ananya looks back at her with firm eyes.

ANANYA

(smiling sarcastically)

Really? So that there is nothing that comes

between your son and my father’s properties.

RUKMANI

(shocked and offended)

How dare you?

Rukmani looks at Ramesh, who was silent throughout.

RUKMANI

(complaining angrily)

She has accused me of such ill thing, say something.

Ramesh is still silent as he knows that Ananya was right, out of shame he gets out of the room. Rukmani, after giving a tough look to Ananya, gets out too, following her husband.

Ananya comes close to Prakash and holds his hands. Prakash looks at the other direction, his eyes getting heavy with tears.

ANANYA

(soft and gently)

Papa, I know you fear that I may leave you,

like Maa did, but even if die while trying to

make this society crime-free, won’t it be a

proud death, like Maa’s?

Tears roll down his cheeks, but he still disapproves the decision by his silence. Ananya leaves his hands and wipes those tears.

ANANYA

Maa too wanted me to join the police, she

dreamed me in her uniform.

After few minutes, getting no response and approval from Prakash, Ananya touches his feet and walks towards the door. She reaches the door and stops, looks behind at Prakash.

ANANYA

(smiles)

I know your blessings are with me, always.

Ananya leaves the room and Prakash starts weeping as he sees the closed door.

FADE OUT.
