My perfect gift …

It’s here again, the time to be merry,

But it seems I may need a schooner of sherry.

It’s not the shopping or the writing of cards,

Or dressing the tree that I find so hard.

I can even cope with tunes on a loop,

That invade my ears in every shop.

But the task I hate most, at this time of year,

That fills me with dread, instead of good cheer,

Is wrapping gifts for family and friends,

A back-breaking chore that never seems to end.

Add to that, a few obscene exclamations,

As I get to grips with the task in question.

You see me and cello-tape are incompatible,

I really find it quite insufferable.

The realisation I have lost the end,

Really drives me round the bend.

And when I eventually retrieve the thing,

It has sneaky plot to spring.

As I carefully peel back a length to apply,

It sticks to my fingers, so I howl and cry.

Now I’m not normally one to scream and shout,

Or swear, or inclined to throw things about.

But this year, in order to relieve my temper,

Could someone please buy me a cello-tape dispenser!
