A A A

The cold November wind runs through my hair like horses on a field. People are talking all around me while I stand there, alone. I grab my journal from my bag and sit on a nearby bench and jot down my ideas for my next novel. As people walk and brush past me leaving behind them a rush of wind I see my best friend, Natalia get off the bus and rush towards the bench.

“Holaaaa.” She says as she sits down next to me.

“Hey Natalia. What you doin’  today?” I ask as I put my journal in my bag.

“Nothing much, just gonna go to the Cafe downtown later with James.” She said as well gushing at the same time.

“Tsk tsk, always rushing into relationships.” I said as I laugh.

“Your one to talk, you're always on and off with the same guy!” She said looking into my eyes.

“Ya ya.” I said as we walked into the big marble building, bumping into a dozen of people.

Natalia and I both walked into our first period class; Earth Science. I was always nervous when I get to this class because I always see my crush; Nathan. I sit down pretending to be working on the sheets assigned as I peek out of the corner of my eye to see if he is looking at me.

“Is he looking?” I ask Natalia as she stares at him awkwardly.

“Nope, he probably doesn't care.” She says to me as she continues to work as fast as she can since she was way behind on the classwork. As I finish up my work I quickly take a glimpse at him seeing that he is looking in my direction. I quickly avert my eyes away panicking in my mind hoping he didn’t see me.

“Let’s go over the answers. #1 is B, #2 is C, and #3 is D. Any questions?” Mr. Bostrom says as he flips to the next page of our answer key.

“I have a question.” Nathan says as he adjusts himself in his seat.

“What is the elevation of the highest index contour shown on the map for question #7?” He asks as he quickly jots notes down.

“Well you see Nathan the….” that's when I drone off.

I think about how much better it would be if Nathan and I were still best friends. I think about how selfish and reckless I was in 6th and 7th grade. I think of myself as the bully of him.

“I can’t take this anymore!” I whisper/yelled under my breath.

“Is everything alright Ramona?” Mr. Bostrom asks as he looks at me confused as well as the rest of the class.

“Y-ya. I’m sorry for interrupting.” I say as everyone including Nathan look at me uneasy. As the bell rings I grab my stuff and try to rush out the door when I feel a arm brush in front of me.

"Hey Ramona. I was wondering if you wanna talk tonight?"

"Of course! I would love to fianlly chat." I say as I give him a hug.

"Okay! I'll call you!" He says as he runs away.

I gush and know that I just might have a chance.
