The Hawk

You Can't Save Them

I am back at the mansion I grew up in to save the last person in my life, my wife… and my unborn child. For the last three painful months, I had believed that she had been murdered by my father in cold blood, but now I know she's alive and he's held her captive for all this time. There's no mercy I have for him, he's taken everything from me. Tonight, I end his life like I should have long ago, but I need to save her first. I can't go in there guns blazing, I need to play this safe. She's all I have left, and I need to save her. I slam through the old broken doors and I see her sitting in a chair, beaten to a pulp with a gun held to her head by my father. He's smiling, I can tell he's enjoying this. I see the fear in her eyes, and the blood all over her. Huge red letters that spell out ‘mistake’ in her own blood is written on her stomach.

I have seen enough, my father starts to speak, “Look at you, trying to be the hero, thinking that you can save her. Just remember you did this to her, Ryan, if you had just listened and stayed at home like a good little boy, I wouldn't have killed all these people you quote unquote ‘care about’ but in reality you don't need them, but I'll let you know one thing, I have enjoyed every second of it.” He starts to laugh, I hate it when he laughs.

I look directly at him “Let her go and I will come home and listen to you, but let her go please, I’m begging.”

He smiles at my shaking voice and says to me “That's a pretty good offer, isn't it? There's only one issue with it, I don't believe a single fucking word coming out of your mouth.” She looks at me and yells, “I love yo-” He pulls the trigger, blood splatters everywhere, “NO!!!!” I yell and run over to her and hold her lifeless body in my hands, I feel the tears start to roll down my cheeks “I'm so, so sorry. I should've saved you, but I couldn't even do that.” I pull her closer to me and feel her blood running all over my hands.

I hear him start to speak right behind me, “Look what you've done, Ryan, all these people hurt because of your actions. Because you thought playing dress up could save her and everyone else in your life. Remember, this is all your fault, if you would have just listened to me this wouldn't have happened Hopefully, this was a learning curve for you. Now get up off your ass, it's time to go home.” He puts his hand on my shoulder in a fatherly fashion.

I get up, my fists clenched, all I feel is rage running through me. I turn to him and upper cut him right in his jaw and yell, “YOU SON OF A BITCH YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME.”

I start rapidly punching him in his face, he falls to the floor and looks at me and yells, “YOU DON'T NEED ANY OF THEM, ALL PEOPLE DO IN THIS WORLD IS THINK ABOUT THEMSELVES, BUT FAMILY WILL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU, YOU ARE MY SON DO YOU HEAR ME, AND YOU WILL LISTEN RIGHT NOW, YOU BELONG TO ME,” but I know the truth by now, I have no feelings left for him.

“No,” I say. He looks at me puzzled but confused and says, “No?! What the fuck do you mean no, you better listen before I have to punish you for talking ba-”

I start to beat him and yell, “YOU DON'T OWN ME ANYMORE,THIS IS MY LIFE, DO YOU HEAR ME?! YOU DON'T OWN ME ANYMORE FROM THIS POINT ON, I WON'T LET YOU HURT ANYONE ANYMORE! ALL YOU DO IS DESTROY PEOPLE! THAT ENDS NOW! YOU ALWAYS SAID THAT PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS, WELL, I'M HAPPY TO SAY THAT YOU’RE THE IDIOT, NO ONE ELSE!” I grab the gun lying on the floor that he used to kill my wife with but he knocks it out of my hand.

He grabs me by the throat and slams me on the ground, beginning to beat me and speaks angrily, “You are my disappointment in the family. I knocked up that whore that you call a mother on accident, and ever since it has been giving me trouble. I'm done dealing with your stupidity, but just for you, I made sure she had a slow and painful death, just like your little love interest I killed, and I enjoyed every second of it.” I’m starting to go light headed as if I’m about to pass out. I look to my left and see a sharp piece of wood from the broken doors laying on the ground. I grab it quickly and start to repeatedly stab him in the stomach, he falls off of me and I start to slowly get up, and then I hear him softly speak, “You just killed your father, how do you feel about that?”

I look at him and speak without hesitation, “Just fine, go burn in hell.” He then laughs and coughs up blood and bleeds out quickly from the multiple stab wounds. He is finally gone. I slowly walk over to my wife, and I can't hold it in. I start  to cry, “I’m so sorry, I failed you, I'm so, so sorry.” The one person I truly care about is gone, and it's all my fault. He was right, if I had never tried becoming a hero, everyone I love might still be here. I might have had my own son. I know now that doing this job has one rule, you cannot be attached to anyone. As long as you do this job you have to be alone, or all your enemies will use that against you to torture you. I went down this road, I chose this life and I can't come back from who I am now. I will from now on, always be alone.

Epilogue

Forever and Always

Three nights, no sleep. I'm running the rooftops tonight trying to keep my mind on other things, but all I can think about is my wife. If I could have stopped my father in time, if I was there just a little bit earlier, I might have been able to save her. I wish I could go back to when I pushed her away due to letting my father get the best of me and have me take out all my frustrations on her, he made me someone else. I never deserved her, but deep down I had always loved her, knowing what I know now, I would have never started this vigilante thing. I  was young and dumb. I thought back then I could save everyone and run away with the girl in my arms into the sunset, but the reality of it is... I couldn't save anyone I loved, not even my own wife. I can only do one thing at this point, to do my best to protect the innocent from the evil lurking around every corner. It is what she would have wanted me to do. I think back to all those times I held her in my arms the nights I had almost lost her. I remember exactly what she said to me the night of December 23rd like it was yesterday. She looked at me with those beautiful, hazel eyes and said, “I love you, Ryan, and I will always be here for you no matter what, till the end of time. Ryan, you will always be in my heart.” I look up at the stars and smile for the first time in the last two years and say to myself, “You will always be in mine, forever and always.”
