Petunia the Cat’s Great Adventure

There was a lot of activity at the national space center that day. All the cadets, pilots and officers were looking really busy. They were all getting ready for the launch of the space mission to Mars, carrying human life for the first time. There was a sense of urgency in the air but at the same time it was buzzing with excitement. The chief officer looked tense. He was responsible for everything and was really feeling the pressure. Just then he heard a familiar voice.

“Daddy, this is so awesome”. He heard his 9-year-old daughter Melissa say. “Hi dear, we came to wish you best of luck, Louis let us in”, his wife remarked. Louis was the security officer at the center. As the chief’s family had clearance to the center, they were hardly ever stopped unless a security warning was up. “I am so excited daddy”, Melissa said. “I am also excited dear”, replied the chief. “Where is the shuttle’s crew daddy” asked Melissa. “They are already inside the shuttle, kiddo”, replied the chief. Melissa looked at the big screen showing the shuttle from different angles.

Melissa didn’t know that her beloved cat, Petunia, had followed her to the car and inside the space center. Petunia loved to explore and soon found herself outside the center, near the docking station. Everyone was so busy getting ready for the flight that they didn’t notice Petunia at all. She entered the space shuttle and starting checking out the various compartments inside it.

Petunia was so busy exploring around that she was startled when she heard the loud count down. She gingerly walked towards the main cabin and saw the pilot. She wondered what the countdown meant. Suddenly, the shuttle started shaking violently and thrust towards the sky. Petunia was banged against the wall of the cabin. She got stuck inside a little hammock like contraption near the window. “Oh no”, Petunia thought, “this is not right”. After a little while, she felt that the vehicle pushed forward with even more acceleration. Now they were going extremely fast.

The pilot announced that they had crossed the moon. Petunia was scared but she was also very curious. She looked out of the window just in time to see the moon zooming by. She tried to search for the man in the moon that everyone was talking about but she didn’t see anyone there. “Oh my, I’ll tell all the neighborhood cats that they were wrong about this”. Soon, she heard the pilot talking to crew members, saying that everything was going according to plan. “Well, not quite”, thought Petunia and smiled to herself. She was getting hungry now and wondered if Melissa was looking for her. Bang! She heard a loud noise. She heard the crew talking about a bunch of asteroids coming towards them and one of them had hit the base. Petunia forgot that she was hungry and covered her eyes with her paws. More asteroids were getting closer, but the pilot skillfully maneuvered away.

Whew! Petunia felt sleepy now and decided to take a nap. She woke up with a start when the shuttle suddenly stopped. They had landed. She came outside and saw huge craters. She wondered if there were little green men living here. How will her friends react when she would tell them that she had traveled to Mars? She thought. She starting exploring this strange red planet but soon felt very lonely. She longed to go back to her home, back to Melissa and her loving family. She missed her cat friends too, even though she was always fighting with them. She went back to the shuttle and thought that she could fly it herself.

The crew was nowhere around and she didn’t know when they would return. Desperate to go back, she accidently pressed the big red button without knowing what it would do. The door closed and the shuttle started to fly forward. It flew all the way back to Earth but as they were getting back into orbit, she felt the shuttle falling apart. The cabin felt extremely hot and Petunia felt that she was on fire. It was so hot that she couldn’t breathe. She looked out of the window and saw the blue outline of the ocean. She felt the shuttle slam against the surface of the water and felt herself drowning. “Meow, Meow”, she started screaming. “What is it Petunia, why are you crying, looks like you were having a bad dream,” she heard Melissa say!
