Marianne came in a rush to her daughter Debbie’s; room. She was screaming in her sleep while still tucked in bed.

“Stop, daddy”! Deborah screams in her sleep.

“Debbie, wake up, it’s mommy!” Marianne shakes her troubled daughter awake.

“Mom!” she weeps.

“It’s alright, sweetie, I’m right here”, she comforts Deborah while sitting on the bed.

“I keep dreaming of him, mom”, Deborah tells Marianne as she cries helplessly in her mother’s arms.

“Daddy can’t hurt us anymore, Debbie, he’s gone”, she consoles her daughter.

“I’m going to make you something to eat, okay?” Marianne kisses Deborah’s forehead.

She nods and so Marianne makes her way down the stairs of their suburban home and into the kitchen. She hides her sadness from her daughter. It pains her to see Deborah so distraught because of her violent husband who has mistreated Marianne and his own daughter Deborah for so long.

Luke has always been a temperamental hot head. Marianne knew that the very first day she met him in high school. He was always getting into fights with other teammates in his football team. But back then, you see, she thought it was “sexy” to have such an assertive man as a boyfriend. But he became increasingly violent and quite possessive. Marianne was in love and it didn’t bother her as much as it should have that her husband was very volatile. It all came crashing down when Luke wasn’t satisfied with beating on his wife that he also turned deranged and controlling with his own daughter. The day Marianne witnessed her husband strike a hand on Deborah so mercilessly she hit him on the head with a Louisville slugger. Luke lay unconscious as Marianne and Deborah fled the house to get help. After countless of restraining orders and visits to courts; Luke was finally arrested. But not for beating on his wife, but for actually killing a man in a bar fight. It was only a matter of time before Luke’s anger exploded and ended in murder. And as the judge sentenced him to life in prison; he vowed to Marianne that someday he will be free and come after her and Deborah who is only sixteen years old. It’s been months now and the nightmares; the fear, they still remain ingrained in Deborah’s brain.

Marianne makes her way to the kitchen and opens the fridge to take out some eggs. She’s shaking herself, trying to mask her woes. She knows her daughter is falling apart and there’s nothing she can do about it. There’s a sudden knock on the door and she walks to get it but very hesitantly.

“Who is it?” she asks nervously.

“Mrs. Reese, it’s Detective Santos and my partner Detective Scott from the NYPD, we have a matter to discuss with you if you please let us in”, someone responds from outside.

Marianne peeps through the peephole and sees two gentlemen in suits standing there and she opens the door reluctantly.

“Hi, how can I help you?”

“Mrs. Reese, there was an incident that occurred while your husband was being transferred to another facility up state. Somehow he along with another inmate overpowered a few guards on the bus and managed to escape”, one of the detectives informed.

“Oh no!” Marianne’s heart sank.

“They stole a vehicle and there seemed to be an accident where the car your husband was in exploded leaving a gentleman we highly believe to be Luke Reese badly injured. However, the other suspect remains at large. We really need you to come with us to the morgue to identify the body”, he says.

Marianne almost collapsed she couldn’t believe this was happening. Deborah approached her, she had heard everything.

“Mom”, she spoke and Marianne was able to spot the worrisome look on her daughter’s face.

“It’s okay, baby, I will be right back. You just stay put here, okay?” and Deborah nods as Marianne walks away with the officers.

At the chilly and eerie morgue; the three of them stand before a black body bag and the coroner stands before it and asks Marianne if she’s ready, which she replies; “Yes”.

He unzipped the body bag and Detective Santos puts his hand on Marianne’s shoulder to help her brace herself.

“Oh god!” she sighs and the detectives nod their head.

“I understand how difficult this is, but we just needed you to confirm it was him”, he said.

She stared at the body visibly and badly burned but still identifiable.

“No, you don’t understand”, Marianne turns to them.

“This isn’t my husband. You have the wrong man”, she says and everyone stands surprised.

“What, are you sure?” Detective Scott asks.

“I think I know how my husband looks like, detective”, she affirmed.

But then…

“Oh no, Debbie!” she cried.
