I envy any person that has ever truly loved their Father… if even for a moment!

My name is Stephen Meir, born in Stoke-on-Trent, January 1961. I was one of life’s unplanned and mostly regrettable arrivals. My Father, ‘Big Ted’, had been resentfully obliged, far too young into
marriage and fatherhood.

Big Ted, like his Dad before him, was innately duty bound to teach his naïve, teenage Irish bride, and his new, innocent protégé, the brutal lessons of life. Schoolings, that had been so cruelly
and dutifully handed down to him.

By the time I could reason and speak I had already developed the will and ability to survive his exacting strict rules, and often drunken, whims and outrages. I had become painfully aware of who
and what I was; “You’re a nobody, a fucking idiot, you know nothing, you’re a stupid little twat!”; By the age of four, there were no more tears when I faced those angry words and the vicious
punishments that followed. Just silent, insubordinate defiance.

I could never remember a time when I had ever felt anything but pure hatred for, ‘Dad’. As I grew older, we both learned to understand that the feeling was unequivocally mutual, and I would never,
ever, meet… my birth rite hero

Exploring the theme of ‘Nature versus Nurture’, Breaking the Line, covers my formative years. From my miserable, ruthless childhood, through to my angry, suicidal, teenage years. An intimate voyage
of bizarre, physical and mental cornerstones of life. From a toddler, to the day I took the last good hiding I would ever take from him. A journey that moulded and shaped me into the man, the
father, and ultimately was my history, and influences, in creating my own son’s, childhood and character.
