My Origami Swans

I’ve never done this thing before,

so I’m a learner,

a novice.

I’ll read the instructions,

follow them through,

fold upon fold,

crease after crease;

I’ve created a swan,

and, hey,

this is you.

Now I’m going to create the soulmate,

the life-long connection,

the one there beside you

in my river’s reflection.

I know what I’m doing,

I’ve done it before,

this time it will be easier,

of that I’m really sure.

But my paper,

crinkled,

crumpled,

from folds

so badly made.

I’ve gone back for another try,

hoping those crinkles

will now fade.

I fold and crease,

crease and fold,

cannot get it right,

but it ends up something similar.

Kind of appropriate,

battered,

and odd,

not quite right but almost,

you can’t quite pick the

problem.

It will do.

I’ll set it on the river,

made of crepe,

greenish blue.

It represents the river,

the one I sail to you.
