Hold Me Close

They’ve gone now, all the guests. There’s nothing much for us to do but tidier up a bit, collect up the rubbish, make this room a bit neat again.

I’ve seen you watching me, our eyes have held frequently. But you’ve not approached me, kept your distance, and I have done the same.

Do you fear rejection as much as I do?

But now we’re alone here, and in all the space we seem to move closer together until we are standing side by side. We both reach for the same wrapper and our hands touch. I lift my eyes to your face and you do the same to mine.

Please don’t let me be blushing, I silently beg.

We don’t say a word but you start up the music, open your arms and I take my place. You hold me close, so close, and I know this is where I belong.

Do you feel the same?

Your arms tighten and you sigh. I relax myself against you and we sway and step, gently. We are dancing but it is so much more than that.

Hold me close,” I whisper. “And never let me go again.”

You reply, “I won’t!”
